Manchester City quest for a quadruple continues as they welcome Borussia Dortmund at home. The Germans are currently like a wounded lion. Currently, they are not at their best but they can still hurt the home side. Dortmund has quality players who can create some real trouble for Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola will also be extremely anxious to win this one. Since his arrival in Manchester, the Citizens haven’t been able to go past the quarterfinals in the Champions League. Against Borussia Dortmund, they are in a very good position to qualify for the semi-finals.
The reason behind it because the BVB aren’t having a great season, while Manchester City is in great form. Dortmund are currently are in the fifth position and they might miss out on Champions League football as well. On the other hand, Manchester City are just running away from the Premier League title.
Under Guardiola, they haven’t done well in the Champions League. Even against Lyon last season, they were the favorites but they bottled it badly. As for Borussia Dortmund, it is will be extremely difficult but they do have the quality to cause an upset.
This season, Manchester City has been excellent in attack as well as defence. Despite Sergio Aguero being largely absent, the Citizens have no problem in scoring goals. Defensively Ruben Dias and John Stones have formed a formidable partnership. Dias has settled in very well and Stones comeback has been remarkable.
For Dortmund Erling Haaland has been making all the news. The Norwegian has been in news only for good reasons. He is being helped by the likes of Sancho, Hazard, and Reus. But the bigger issue for the BVB is their defence. They have struggled to keep a clean sheet or maintain a lead in a game.
Over the two legs due to City’s superior defensive record they clearly have an upper hand. Dortmund will rely upon counter-attacks to score goals at the Etihad. While Manchester City will try to choke them with their constant attacks.
Pep Guardiola might try to play a false 9 to open up Dortmund’s defence. If that does not work he can always call up Sergio Aguero or Gabriel Jesus as a real No.9. Dortmund will only have a chance if their experienced heads like Hummels and Reus are able to bring their A-game.
