Fernandinho has been a long-serving player for Manchester City. The 36-year-old joined the club in 2013. So far he has won three Premier League trophies, six League Cups, and one FA Cup. However, he is now 36 years old and he is unable to maintain the same levels as once used to do.
Despite his age, he seems to be a trusted lieutenant for Pep Guardiola. This season he has made 36 appearances in all competitions. However sooner or later, he will leave Manchester City and they will have to look for a replacement. It is not clear whether he will leave the Citizens by the end of this season or not.
Manchester City eye English midfielder
Fernandinho’s contract with the club will expire this summer. While the League Cup winners are willing to offer him a one-year contract extension. Thus there is this uncertainty whether he will extend his stay with the club or not.
According to The Times, the Citizens have identified West Ham’s Declan Rice as a potential replacement for their captain. With the uncertainty over the Brazilian’s future, they will try to bring Rice to Etihad in case Fernandinho decides to leave the club.
The youngster has been in impressive form this season and he has really come off age this year as well. He has made 38 appearances for West Ham this season, in which he has been dribbled past 1.1 times per game, 1.8 tackles per game, and 2.1 interceptions per game.
Manchester City worried about Rice’s price tag:
While the Citizens maintain an interest in him, West Ham has slapped a big price tag. The Englishman is an extremely valuable player to the Hammers. Even West Ham manager David Moyses had said that it would take “Bank of England money” to take Rice away from the Hammers.
They want somewhere around $100 million for the Englishman. While Manchester City believes that West Ham have overpriced his evaluation. They are not willing to pay such huge fees for just one player. While Transfermarkt has valued him around $68 million.
Pep Guardiola is said to be keen on bringing him to Etihad as well. Though the Citizens already have Rodri in the pivot position, they still need more competition for him. The seems to be that initially, Rice would come in and slowly he will be integrated into the first team.
Manchester City to face competition for Declan Rice
The Champions League finalists seem to have joined the race a little too late. Chelsea and Manchester United are already in the race to sign him. The Englishman was a former academy player for the Blues and he was realised by the club at the age of 14. He is also close friends with Chelsea star Mason Mount.
While this year only it was reported that Rice has enquired about life at Manchester United. He was on English duty and he asked about the club to his English teammates who play for the club. The likes of Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire were there and they have told him about the club as well.
While it is not clear where Rice himself personally wants to play in the future. But considering that Rodri is already at the club, playing in his position, it is unlikely that he would want to join Manchester City.
12th Man Opinion
City fans would like to see Fernandinho be replaced by Rice. He is young, he is a leader and he has a lot of potentials as well. However, they would not want their club to spend $100 million on a defensive midfielder.
