Raheem Sterling has gone quite a transformation under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. He was often criticised for his lack of finishing skills. However, under Guardiola, he managed to overcome that and he started scoring goals for fun. But for the past two seasons, he has struggled a lot and he hasn’t been at his best in the Premier League.
Despite this, the Citizens have continued to win trophies with him. He also understands how Guardiola wants his team to play. But there is concern over his form this season, his contract extension talks have been also been delayed.
Why Sterling is delaying Manchester City contract extension talks?
The former Liverpool winger has now just two years left on his current contract. A reason behind the delay is that Sterling has now changed his agents as well. With a new agent coming in contract extension have to begin once again.
Also, BBC last reported that in his current deal he earns around £300,000 a week. However, he hasn’t been able to justify those wages. It is still unclear how much money the Citizens are willing to offer to him.
Manchester City’ new signings to be funded by Sterling’s departure
With uncertainty over his contract situation, Football insider has reported that Pep Guardiola could sell the Englishman. The 26-year-old forward is valued at around $80 million and he can fetch them big money which can eventually pay the way for new signings. With Sergio Aguero’s departure confirmed by the club, City could be set to bring in a new attacking force.
This season Manchester City have relied upon their false 9 tactics to do so well in the season. They have already won the League Cup and probably next week they can win the Premier League as well. Not only this they also have a 1-2 advantage against PSG in the Champions League semi-final second leg.
But the false nine is a tactic on which they can’t rely every season. They will have to find new ways of attacking and scoring goals. Perhaps a change in personnel can also help them in bringing out new ways of playing attacking football.
The two players who could come from Sterling’s sale
The same report from Football Insider has claimed that if Sterling leaves, Manchester City will go for Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish. The Norwegian has been the most sought-after footballer in recent months. He will be a direct replacement for Sergio Aguero. While Jack Grealish will be a replacement for Raheem Sterling.
Pep Guardiola wants to have more technical players in his team. While Sterling has adapted very well under the Spaniard but he is not his ideal winger. The former Liverpool winger relies more upon his pace to score goals and go past defenders. Grealish is seen as a player who will more of a natural fit under Guardiola.
At his Haaland’s age, Aguero was in La Liga with Atletico Madrid. He scored 19 goals in all competitions. While the Norwegian has already scored 37 goals in all competitions this season. Sterling has scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists, Grealish has scored 7 goals and provided 12 assists. It should also be kept in mind, that the former has been injured for quite a while and he plays for an inferior team compared to Sterling’s.
12th Man Opinion
As for Manchester City, they will be sad to see Sterling leave the club. He has been an important player for their team in recent years. However he hasn’t been at his best, so they won’t mind seeing him leave the club.
The players mentioned above are very good players and they would be more than happy to see them thrive at the club. Grealish looks like a great replacement for Sterling and it is exciting to consider the prospect of the Aston Villa captain with Guardiola.
