Manchester United are willing to cut ties with goalkeeper David de Gea in the upcoming transfer window. The Spaniard’s representatives are already sounding out potential buyers as he prepares to leave Old Trafford.
David de Gea has been at the club since 2011, having arrived from Atletico Madrid for a then-record fee for a goalkeeper. Initially, he struggled to keep up with the physicality of the Premier League. But he has arguably been the league’s best goalkeeper of the last decade. He has won the Premier League, FA Cup, and the Europa League so far with the Red Devils.
One of De Gea’s most memorable moments in a United shirt came in a 3-1 win at Arsenal in 2017 when he made a whopping 14 saves, a joint Premier League record. In that season, he kept 18 clean sheets and was named in the Premier League’s team of the season.
But the 30-year old has made some high-profile errors in recent seasons and has come under massive scrutiny. And now he faces stiff competition for the goalkeeping spot with Dean Henderson. His future at United is looking very gloomy.
Henderson United’s new no.1?
David de Gea started the current season as the leading goalkeeper at Old Trafford. He started 24 of the first 26 league games, keeping clean sheets in 9 of those. He also played 5 Champions League group stages games. Dean Henderson, meanwhile, was the number one for the Cup competitions.
De Gea was then unavailable due to family reasons and since then Henderson has deputized for him. He was expected to return back to the starting line-up against Brighton at the weekend. But Henderson again started ahead of him. And now it seems the Englishman is the preferred option for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Henderson has kept three clean sheets in United’s four recent outings to make a claim for the number one jersey. At just 24-year-old, he has plenty to prove but is an established keeper, having impressed on-loan at Sheffield United last season.
As a result, De Gea is ready to call time on his United career and his representatives have begun looking for potential suitors.
De Gea’s United exit imminent
David de Gea’s future at Old Trafford is becoming increasingly doubtful. And according to the Daily Mail, De Gea’s representatives are offering his services to Europe’s top clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.
Paris Saint-Germain are firm favorites to land him this summer and are discussing personal terms with the player. And United are also keen to offload him for the right price.
But his astronomical wages of £375,000-a-week could prove problematic for any potential suitor. He also has two years left on his current United contract which expires in June 2023. And United will ask for a fee in the region of £50 million, given their relatively strong position.
Solskjaer still says that both keepers will have opportunities over the remainder of the season. He must decide now whether to start de Gea or Henderson on Thursday against Granada. This will give a clear indication about the situation.
