Donny van de Beek’s future may not be clear-cut, as the Red Devils reportedly look to pip Real Madrid to the Dutchman.
Manchester United are eyeing a bid for Van de Beek, despite it appearing almost certain he was heading to Real. The La Liga giants reportedly had an agreement in place for Van de Beek. However, the Red Devils are still fighting for the Dutchman.
The 22-year old rose to prominence last season. He starred in Ajax’s run to the semi-finals of the Champions League, impressing in knockout games against the likes of Juventus, Tottenham and Madrid. He has also been a key player this campaign for Ajax. The academy graduate has scored eight goals and created five assists in 23 games in the Eredivisie.
According to Marca, United hierarchy are plotting a bid to convince the player against moving to the Spanish capital in favour of Old Trafford. However, it is understood United can only sign the midfielder should Real terminate their pre-agreement with the Dutchman.
How Van de Beek’s future is linked with Pogba’s future
In a January interview, the player himself denied that he had signed the deal with Real, insisting:
“Nothing is official (with Real Madrid). There is no contract. That is the situation. That has not changed throughout the season.”
When asked about choosing between United and Real, he added:
“I don’t want to choose. Both are great clubs, but as I said before, Ajax is also a great club. Therefore, there is nothing to choose from. Everything would be very good.”
The second ace United have up their sleeve is Madrid’s long-term interest in Paul Pogba. Real turned to Van de Beek beacause of the wide gulf between United’s valuation of the Frenchman and their own. But the Red Devils are now willing to sell and reduce their asking price for Pogba.
Marca claims that if United wants to sign Van de Beek, they could only do so if Real Madrid decides to renounce their agreement with the player. If they decide they no longer want to sign him, United will be able to go ahead with an agreement with Ajax.
If Pogba remains at Old Trafford, United will not likely chase Van de Beek. So if Marca’s report has substance to it, it does suggest that Pogba’s future is associated with Van de Beek’s future.
