English football giants Manchester City are eyeing a big move for Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku. City are keen to bolster their squad ahead of the summer transfer window, which is fast approaching by end of the season.
The English Premier League side currently leading the table with 77 points from 33 games. Pep Guardiola and his men have a comfortable 10-point lead over their arch-rivals Manchester United in the league.
The Citizens also recently won the Carabao Cup for the fourth consecutive time. The side won the title last Sunday after defeating Tottenham Hotspur. While Spurs recently sacked their manager Jose Mourinho after poor results in the current term.
Mason is currently taking care of Spurs as interim manager and will be hoping for a good finish. However, it isn’t helping the Spurs as they saw a narrow defeat against in-form City on Sunday. Courtesy of Aymeric Laporte’s late effort in the second half won it for City.
City were also successful against Paris Saint-Germain in the champions league tie on Thursday. PSG suffered a 2-1 defeat at their home courtesy of Mahrez’s brilliance effort. Marquinhos scored the only goal for his side, but it went in vain.
However, City need a steady striker to fill the vacant position of Sergio Aguero in the future. Pep’s side have Gabriel Jesus as a centre-forward, but need a player who can take over Sergio Aguero’s role at City. The Argentine could join his national teammate Messi at Barcelona in La Liga.
City want to sign former United star:
According to Calciomercato, Manchester City are showing interest in signing Belgian international Romelu Lukaku from Italy. The striker is having a wonderful season in Italy with Inter under Antonio Conte. Inter are also closing in on winning the Seria A title this term.
Chelsea are also showing good interest in signing Lukaku from Inter. The striker is capable of scoring goals up front and a real fox in the box. However, Lukaku won’t be happy to return back to Premier League, where he was struggling to find form.
Lukaku had stints with Premier League sides like Everton, Chelsea, and Manchester United. However, he couldn’t shine like he is at Inter at the moment. The striker found his lost form and rhythm at Inter Milan under former Chelsea boss Conte.
Lukaku to replace Aguero?
Manchester City are looking for a long-term replacement for Argentine Sergio Aguero. The veteran striker is set to leave City by end of the season. Argentine is most likely to join Spanish club Barcelona alongside Lionel Messi.
However, Lukaku can’t fill Sergio Aguero’s shoes at the Etihad Stadium. Lukaku’s current contract runs out by end of 2024 summer. The striker also doesn’t want to leave San Siro, after gaining a good fan base and his lost form back.
Chelsea are also in the race to bring the Belgian back to London. Although, Lukaku has struggled to score in Premier League with various clubs amidst the competition. Tuchel wants the Belgian to bolster their attacking set-up with Haaland’s deal getting out of reach.
