Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City are the top candidates for winning the league next season.
Liverpool and Manchester City were a class apart this season. There was a big gap between the first two and the third team in the Premier League Table. Manchester United and Chelsea were in a battle for a Champions League place. But in the end, it was Leicester who went out of the top 4.
It will a very tight battle between all of the clubs next season. But the reason why Manchester United may not be title candidates is the gap between them and Manchester City. Yes, it was a valiant showing but the club has a long way to go still.
Liverpool has retained the majority of their squad and has also added left-back Kostas Tsimikas. Man City on the other hand has seen some changes in the squad. Although Leroy Sane has left him it will not make much of a difference as he was injured for a huge chunk of this season too.
Man City has also added Ferran Torres and Nathan Ake to the squad. Along with the development of Phil Foden, the attack will not be a problem. Man City’s problem was their defense.
Liverpool was the only club to concede less than Manchester City and that is what led them to the title. But City can improve upon their mistakes if they complete the signing of Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.
Kalidou Koulibaly could lead Pep’s men to a title
Pep Guardiola had difficulties managing the defense for Manchester City. Fernandinho, who is there best defensive midfielder had to slot in with Laporte. Because all other options were out due to injury or weren’t playing well.
Erik Garcia did offer support in the latter stages of the season but it was too little too late. But history provides evidence that Pep Guardiola never hesitates in strengthening his weak points.
Man City have already signed Nathan Ake. But the club is looking to add one more defensive signing. According to the Express, Kalidou Koulibaly is the club’s number one target.
They’ve brought in Ake as well and I think that if they do get Koulibaly, because there’s a lot of talk about him coming from Napoli, my own honest opinion, you give Manchester City the Premier League trophy now, because I think that is just the missing piece of the jigsaw for them. This was Higginbotham’s statement for City with ESPN FC.
Koulibaly sits at the heart of Napoli’s defense. He is very calm and composed on the ball and is a veteran defender. At 29 he has been at the biggest stages football has to offer and would add a lot of experience to this City team.
However, Man City will have to pay a lot for him. A price tag of 75-80 million is the figure in discussion right now. Man City are considering whether to pay that amount because it looks like a gamble. Koulibaly won’t be a long term solution but in the immediate scenario, he could be vital for the club.
