Real Madrid superstar refuses to blame Cristiano Ronaldo for dropped points

Cristiano Ronaldo decided to leave Real Madrid for Juventus in the recently closed summer transfer window as the world witnessed one of the shocking deals ever take place.

Cristiano Ronaldo, inarguably, was the face of Real Madrid since he arrived from Manchester United in 2009, which made him the then-most expensive player in the history of football. Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed hugely successful years at Real Madrid as helped the side win 4 Champions League trophies.

The Portuguese ruined the oppositions in Spain and La Liga, and in Europe and Champions League for Real Madrid. He was an ever glittering face in their star-studded squad. He was the force that drove Real Madrid forward and helped achieve incredible success in Europe if not Spain.

However, there was no doubt that Ronaldo’s absence would affect Real Madrid if they failed to sign a good replacement in the recently closed summer transfer window, which they failed. Since Real Madrid lost to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup, Real Madrid registered three good victories in the La Liga and players like Isco even claimed Real Madrid did not miss Ronaldo at that moment.

Nevertheless, against Athletic Bilbao, Real Madrid were forced to a draw as they need substitute Isco’s goal to draw level. After the game, Marcelo was asked about Real Madrid performance against Athletic Bilbao, he said, “The draw is a bit disappointing. We were hoping for a fairer outcome, which would have been to win the game. We gave it our all to do so and we improved in the second half but we have to move on from this game and think about the next. We had a lot of the ball and created chances but it just wouldn’t go in for us. We’ve got a fantastic team, we played well, but we couldn’t win the game.”

“We didn’t want to drop any points here. We also lacked a bit of patience. After going behind, we tried to get on top quickly, but that’s the way things go in football. We came very close to getting the three points. We’re firing on all cylinders right now,” he added.

He was also asked if Real Madrid missed Cristiano Ronaldo. Marcelo and Ronaldo enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Real Madrid as the former’s crosses were a source of Ronaldo’s goals. Marcelo admitted Real Madrid missed Ronaldo but played it down by adding that the club missed other greats like Zidane and Raul.

Author’s Take

Real Madrid did not sign any players as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo. While they signed Mariano and gave him Ronaldo’s No.7 jersey, he is not at the level where he can replace Cristiano’s goals. It remains to be seen where Real Madrid would end up with this squad.
