David Luiz has taken a huge pay cut so as to make it easy for the Gunners to sign Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares.
David Luiz has extended his contract with Arsenal for another year raising everyone’s eyebrows after Luiz’s blunderous performance against City. But not everything is as bad as it looks about Luiz’s extension. Arsenal has help from Luiz’s extension as the defender took significant pay-cut from his last contract.
According to The Telegraph Luiz’s pay cut meant Arsenal could sign their two on-loan players on a permanent basis. Center-back Pablo Mari and right-back Cedric Soares joined Arsenal on loan in January this year. The defenders have now signed permanent deals. Arsenal brings Mari from the Brazilian side Flamengo and Soares from Southampton.
Arsenal is looking to strengthen their defense this summer in a bid to revive their form under Arteta. But like other clubs, Arsenal’s financial depletion due to the pandemic may put a hold on their transfer plans.
Many of the Gunners’ players are on high-wage contracts which makes it more difficult for the club to spend big on transfers. Though the players are now on a 12.5% wage-cut, it is still the revenue off-season tickets that holds tight. And such help from players by taking pay-cut in the contract is quite appreciative.
Arsenal Given Financial Solution From Defender’s Pay-Cut For Signings
Every Arsenal fan in the world was annoyingly disappointed when the club announced Luiz has extended. The defender gave away two sloppy goals and was sent off in Arsenal’s resumption game against Manchester City. Not only his consistency at dull performances enrages the Gunners, but it’s also the defender’s age of 32-years which concerns the fans.
But Luiz did the Gunners a huge favor after taking a pay-cut from his earlier £120,000 a week salary. Many are in confusion with Arsenal’s decision to keep a player with such huge pay and bad performances. But the Brazilian along with his pay-cut, also let go of some of his personal terms for staying for another year.
Double Signing Of Mari & Cedric
David Luiz’s such reliving steps put some pressure off the Arsenal board in permanent deals for Mari and Soares. Arsenal has paid an initial amount of £7 million to Flamengo in Mari’s signing. The transfer is said to be finalized around a fee of £14 million. Mari has just made 3 appearances for the Gunners and a knee injury after resumption has sidelined him upto November. Still, Arteta went ahead with his plans to sign the defender on a permanent deal.
The same has happened with Cedric Soares who is yet to play for the Gunners since arriving in January. Arsenal brought him on loan from Southampton to strengthen their right-back position as Bellerin is yet to find his form back after returning from injury. But Soares is also out since January due to a nasal bone fracture. Again, Mikel Arteta gave a green light to make his move permanent.
David Luiz has somewhat lost the confidence of the Arsenal fans and needs to win it back by his performances. Mikel Arteta still considers Luiz a part of his plan and Luiz must return his faith. It remains to be seen of Mari and Soares how they fare when they play regularly. Arsenal is in FA cup action on Sunday away to Sheffield United, looking for a semi-final berth.
