Julen Lopetegui’s bid to lead Spain back to the top of the world has been dealt a blow with the Spanish FA confirming his departure as Fernando Hierro was appointed at the helm.
The Spanish FA dropped a bombshell on the football world as it prepares life under the new man, Fernando Hierro, as Julen Lopetegui’s exit has been confirmed on the eve of the FIFA World Cup in Russia. RFEF supremo, Luis Rubiales, recognised the “impeccable” work carried out by Julen Lopetegui with the Spanish National Team as he was relinquished from his duties as the head coach of Spain.
Lopetegui was announced as the new manager of Real Madrid yesterday, just a week after agreeing on a contract extension with the Spanish National side. Now, La Roja will have a new face on the bench when they are scheduled to face Portugal in two days. Rubiales confirmed the former Real Madrid assistant’s appointment as Under 21 boss Albert Celades was also linked to succeed the outgoing Spaniard.
It was revealed that Rubiales was furious as he had only heard about Lopetegie’s appointment 15 minutes prior to the worldwide release.“Real Madrid C. F. announces that Julen Lopetegui will be the coach of the first team during the next three seasons.” the statement from Los Blancos read,“Julen Lopetegui will be the Real Madrid coach after the celebration of the 2018 World Cup.”
Meanwhile, the media in Spain have wasted no time in forming opinions on the former FC Porto boss.“The consequences of it can be disastrous for the Spanish team,” wrote a SPORT correspondent.“There is no doubt that the coach has all the right in the world to train whoever he wants, but his standing is questioned by the proximity of the start of the competition. The situation demands immediate explanations.” he concluded.
MARCA, on the other hand, seemed to defend the LaLiga side.“It is clear that the arrival of coach Julen to Madrid has not been done at the most opportune time for the national team. But with the professionalism and commitment of all, the squad should not be affected. Surely it is like that.”
This will be a body blow to the Spanish side who are considered as one of the favourites for the spectacle in Russia. The fact that Lopetegui has been negotiating his appointment at the Santiago Bernabeu while preparing the national side for a World Cup is unimaginable and unprofessional. It will be a miracle if Spain manages to shake it off and conquer the footballing world once again. And finally good luck to Julen Lopetegui for the Real Madrid job.
