Reports have emerged that Former Premier League Champions Liverpool have made a bid for AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini. They have reportedly activated the Italian’s £25.8 million release clause.
Liverpool are looking to bolster their squad and challenge for the title next season. With the Reds in need of a midfielder following the departure of Wijnaldum, signing long-time target Pellegrini would be the perfect decision in the current scenario.
The AS Roma skipper is in the last year of his contract and is yet to sign an extension, which has been on the table since Christmas. The Italian club will not be happy to lose him for free.
Pellegrini to Liverpool
Currently, Liverpool is in the market to make several signings. With Gini Wijnaldum moving to PSG, finding a suitable replacement will be the top priority for Klopp. Unless the German is willing to bet all his money on academy graduate Curtis Jones.
Pellegrini has been in good form at Roma. This season, he scored 11 times and assisted 9 in 47 appearances in all competitions. He has established himself as one of the best midfielders in Serie A and is a regular part of the Italian squad. With Pellegrini’s addition, Liverpool’s ability to create and score from the midfield would drastically increase.
The 24-year-old has been previously linked to top clubs such as PSG and Barcelona. But the Italian had no interest in leaving Roma. Though, a move now would seem like the right decision with him at the peak of his potential.
“He is a very intelligent player who looks for the right spaces, the right time to pass, and is so good at choosing the right option. It’s impressive, especially for one so young.” – Paulo Fonseca on Pellegrini.
With the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the new manager, Roma is set to go under a rebuild. The Portuguese manager has already suggested he wants to bring in new midfielders. Meanwhile, Mourinho is yet to sit with Pellegrini and discuss his future at the club. Eric Dier, Hojbjerg, Matic, and Granit Xhaka have all been linked with a move to the Italian club.
Will it happen?
Liverpool signing Pellegrini, who currently has a market value of £36 million from Roma for just £25.8 million would be a bargain. The Reds are looking for a value-for-money midfielder who can settle right in the squad and increase the attacking output.
With Thiago not providing the attacking threat, he could be the fairytale signing all fans are waiting for.
It’s yet to be seen if he wants a move in the first place. The Italian has rejected transfer proposals previously and might not want a move away from home.
Currently, he’s representing Italy in Euros and is not paying heed to the transfer saga, with his sole focus only to win an international trophy.
