Liverpool looking to add another forward next summer. In last season they signed Diogo Jota and this time it could be a former Manchester United player. According to Marca, the Reds will try to sign Memphis Depay this summer.
Klopp’s trio of Salah, Firmino and Mane was one of the most feared front three in Europe. It is with these players Liverpool won the Champions League and the Premier League. However this season they are struggling to score goals and create chances. As a result, the Reds now face the prospect of missing out on a top-four finish.
Despite their struggles, Mo Salah is still thriving at the club. The former Chelsea winger has now scored 28 goals for the Reds in all competitions. The Egyptian is now being linked with a move to Barcelona and Real Madrid. If Salah leaves, the Reds will have to find a suitable replacement for him.
Currently, the Reds are fifth in the table and two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. While Spurs could be level on points with them. The likes of West Ham and Everton might also be able to leapfrog them in the table. For the time being it looks extremely difficult for Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League.
Liverpool to go for Depay
Depay initially had a stint in the Premier League with Manchester United. He joined the Red Devils from PSV in 2015. However he never really managed to settle at Old Trafford. The arrival of Jose Mourinho did not help his cause either.
Thus he was sold to Lyon in 2017. Since then he has managed to revitalize his career. He is also a leader in the Lyon dressing room. Depay is also a crucial player for the Dutch National team. At the age of 27, he is set to hit his peak and it will be a good time for Liverpool to sign him.
The Dutchman has scored 69 goals and further provided 52 assists in 169 appearances for the French side. Currently, Depay is yet to sign a contract extension with Lyon, his current contract expires this summer. Thus he will be a free agent and Liverpool will be able to sign him for free.
However, the Reds will also face competition from Barcelona. Last summer the Dutchman was expected to join his compatriot Ronald Koeman at Camp Nou. But the move did not take place. The Catalans are also expected to make an offer for him.
12th Man Opinion
Currently, Mo Salah is 28 years old and he is at his peak form. If Liverpool are to sell him very few clubs in world football will be able to afford him. The Marca report has stated that Real Madrid and FC Barcelona want to sign him.
However, practically it might not be possible for them to sign him. Liverpool will demand a huge fee to sign. Currently, the revenue for clubs is short due to the coronavirus. Thus it is unlikely that the Spanish giants will be able to sign him.
Secondly, Real Madrid has other primary targets as well. Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are two big-priced assets on their radar. An investment in these two will give more returns in the long term compared to 28 years Salah.
As for Barca, they are themselves going through financial crises. Salah is the star forward for Liverpool and he won’t enjoy the same status at Barca. Also, it is was because of so many injuries that Liverpool hasn’t done well. Thus it is unlikely that Salah will leave Anfield anytime soon.
