Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of making a move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez. The Spanish star has been linked with a host of top European clubs this summer.
The Reds are eyeing Saul as a potential replacement for Gini Wijnaldum, who joined PSG on a free transfer in the summer. However, they may face competition from domestic rivals, Man United.
Saul Niguez to leave Atletico Madrid as Liverpool set to make a bid for midfielder
According to reports from AS, Liverpool are now frontrunners to sign Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid. The Merseyside outfit were initially rebuffed in their early attempts to sign the midfielder. But it appears Liverpool’s recent bid of around £41 million will be enough to appease the Spanish giants.
Reports from Spain claim that Saul is expected to leave the Wanda Metropolitano this summer. The versatile midfielder has reportedly fallen out of favour with Diego Simeone and is keen on playing his football elsewhere.
Saul had a significant dip in his performances and fitness last season. This allowed the likes of Marcos Llorente, Thomas Lemar and Yannick Carrasco to move ahead of him in the pecking order as Atletico clinched the league title.
Hence, Atleti are now looking to cash in on Saul. The sale of the midfielder could generate some much-needed funds for the reigning Spanish champions. The likes of Liverpool, Barcelona and Manchester United have all expressed their interest in acquiring Saul’s services.
Why does Liverpool want Saul at Anfield?
Liverpool are prepared to submit a £41M bid to bring Saul to Anfield. It is believed that Klopp’s side view Saul as a potential replacement for Gini Wijnaldum. The Dutch star left Liverpool on a free transfer this summer after five years at the club.
However, some reports claim that Liverpool might include club captain Jordan Henderson as part of the deal to bring Saul to Anfield. There has been uncertainty over Henderson’s future at the club as talks over a contract extension for the midfielder have reportedly turned sour.
Saul is under contract at Atletico until 2026. However, Simeone’s side are reportedly ready to accept a £41M offer from Liverpool for the midfielder. Furthermore, Saul is also one of the ideal specimens of Simeone’s aggressive style of play that tunes in quite well with Klopp’s Gegenpressing system at Anfield.
Saul Niguez career and honours

He made 33 appearances in Atletico Madrid’s title-winning campaign last season. However, the classy midfielder is looking for regular football elsewhere as he enters his prime.
