Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are planning to buy Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal in January transfer window.
According to The Guardian, Jurgen Klopp is looking to add more expensive depth to the side as Liverpool are aiming to sustain in the title race.
Chamberlain has become a primary transfer target for various English clubs including Liverpool and Manchester City. This England international is rumoured to be unsettled at Arsenal for various reasons.
The 23-year-old winger joined Gunners in 2011 for a reported fee of £12m from Southampton. Arsene Wenger was quick enough to snatch the young prospect five years back. Since then he has made over 170 appearances for the London club and has scored 20 goals.
In his fifth season with Arsenal, the winger is said to be unhappy for various reasons. Chamberlain has scored six goals this season across all competitions. But he has started only 8 Premier League games this season and has lasted 90 minutes on only one occasion.
Chamberlain has 18 months left on his contract with Gunners and is yet to decide on his future. There have also been some reports that Arsenal is planning to offer the player with a new contract. But till now Wenger hasn’t confirmed about any new contract negotiations.
In the recent weeks, the rumours started, linking Chamberlain with Manchester City and Liverpool. It is understood that Liverpool is plotting a move to scoop this Arsenal star in January. But considering the past relationship between Arsenal and Liverpool, it will be difficult to complete a deal.
Back in 2013, things became complicated when Luis Suarez was transferred to Liverpool, despite Arsenal trying to trigger his buyout clause that turned out not to exist. The relationship between two Premier League giants is still to be fully repaired.
The latest reports suggest that Liverpool is monitoring Chamberlain’s situation at Arsenal. The former Southampton player will cost at least cost £25 million as per the current market value. Jurgen Klopp has already started to build a strong team at Anfield, and Chamberlain may even consider moving to Arsenal.
The Gunners were open to the idea of selling him in last summer, but lately, Wenger has shown a desire to keep this talented youngster. It is highly unlikely that a deal will happen in January as Arsenal will look to not to sell him to a rival club.
Liverpool is currently 2nd in the Premier League table with 40 points and 6 points behind table-toppers Chelsea. Meanwhile, Arsenal is in the 4th position with 37 points.
