Ex-Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has insisted that Liverpool have the potential to hurt Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League.
Liverpool currently holds a 5-2 advantage over AS Roma in the Champions League semi-finals after their visitors suffered a thrashing in the first leg at Anfield. The Reds look likely to march on into the final of the elite competition where they will face Real Madrid. The La Liga giants have been there twice in the past two seasons and lifted the trophy against Atletico Madrid and Juventus in successive seasons.
The Los Blancos booked their spot in the final after they held Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in a 2-2 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu. Madrid qualified 4-3 on aggregate and is on course to lift the European crown for a third successive season running. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds should set up a crunch encounter in the final of the Champions League unless a disappointing shock awaits in the Italian capital tonight.
However, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard believes that Liverpool is more than capable of hurting Zinedine Zidane’s team, who sit third on the Spanish table.
Gerrard Says Liverpool Can Hurt Madrid-
Speaking to BT Sport, the 37-year-old former Reds midfielder was asked whether he was happy if Liverpool could face Real Madrid in the final to which he replied, “On what you’ve seen over the two legs, for sure, because you look at the Liverpool team and where they’re strong. They can really hurt this Madrid team.”
Gerrard then went on to praise Madrid for this incredible feat but still backed his former side to bury off the Spanish outfit, “It’s an incredible achievement, third year on the spin reaching the final, but it was desperate at times. If you think about the number of chances they [Madrid] have let Bayern have over the two legs I can’t see Liverpool being that wasteful, I think Liverpool are more clinical than Bayern Munich and if them chances come about in a final I think they could really hurt them.”, he explained.
I think that Liverpool first needs to concentrate on the job at hand with AS Roma because the Italians proved what they can do against Barcelona. However, the final is an intriguing prospect and Liverpool certainly look strong on paper and their front-line is much more dangerous at taking chances.
