Jurgen Klopp named an attacking lineup with Firmino, Salah, Jota, and Mane, all starting together. Salah gave the Reds a perfect start with his 3rd-minute swiveling shot finding the back of the net.
Here are the five talking points from the game:
1. Ruined chances sink Liverpool
The main reason for Liverpool dropping points again is their woeful finishing. Their forwards were guilty of wasting just too many chances throughout the 90 minutes.
Salah, Firmino, Jota and Mane, all four of them got some gilt-edged chances but disappointing finishing and some good goalkeeping from Martin Dubravka limited the scoreline to 1-0 till the extra-time.
2. Salah makes history
Mo Salah has been one of the best signings for Liverpool in their history. Today, he reached another milestone in his career with the Reds when he fired Liverpool to an early lead against Newcastle.
That goal took his tally to 20 Premier League goal in this campaign. That means he became the first player in Liverpool’s history to score 20+ goals in three consecutive seasons. An amazing feat to achieve! Liverpool fans, Mo Salah over Luis Suarez?
3. Joe Willock – Newcastle’s hero again
There is something about loanees this season! Jesse Lingard for West Ham and now Joe Willock for Newcastle United. Willock scored the winner for Newcastle United in the last game against the in-form West Ham and today he stepped up again to net the equalizer against the reigning Premier League champions.
This is his fourth goal for the Magpies this season. Arsenal will be definitely feeling disappointed with their decision to let this young lad leave on a loan.
4. Who wants make the top four?
It seems like no one really wants to grab that fourth Champions League spot. Manchester rivals have a solid hold on the first and second spot.
Leicester City is at the 3rd spot with four points more than fourth-placed Chelsea. Thus, it looks like one of Chelsea, West Ham and Liverpool will get that fourth spot. Surprisingly, all three teams dropped points in their recent Premier League games.
With this draw, Liverpool climbed to the 6th spot on the league table but if they haven’t conceded that late goal, they would be at the much-demanded 4th position. Now Chelsea and West Ham are ahead of them with a point and a game in hand. Interestingly, both of these team are going to compete against each other today.
5. THE 12TH MAN Opinion
Willock has been sensational for Steve Bruce who termed the youngster as the “super-sub”. Even though he has been great after coming off the bench, the manager needs to find a way to start him for the rest of the league games. The tweet below tells how pivotal he has been to the Magpies.
Jurgen Klopp had all his most potent attackers on the pitch yet they scored just a solitary goal. The social media is harsh and the people didn’t resist laughing at Liverpool’s poor finishing.
