The Barcelona ace fears this shot-stopper may leave for Manchester United in the summer as De Gea is set to join their great rivals Real Madrid
Barcelona and Manchester United have locked horns over the years for several signatures. This summer braces for the latest off-field encounter between the two. And Lionel Messi has a feeling in his waters that shot-stopper Ter Stegan might be pillaged to Old Trafford. The German ‘keeper is apparently scouted by the Premier League giants as a replacement to David De Gea, who’s supposedly on his way to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Ter Stegan has grown from strength to strength since joining the Catalans from Borussia Monchengladbach. Once Claudio Bravo vacated, he became the No.1 choice in goal for the league and European games. His 18 clean-sheets for the season is bettered only by Atletico’s Jan Oblak.
He has a release clause of £160 million in his contract. Lionel Messi fears losing their primary guardian to United if a lucrative offer comes by eventually. However, it’s conditional as a bid is understood to be made only if De Gea departs. The Spaniard is long scouted by the European champions and only missed out on him in 2016 due to late submission of transfer papers.
Keylor Navas, on his way in the opposite direction at the time, has since gone on to prove himself in goal. But it appears that Real haven’t given up in their pursuit of the United star. This summer might finally be the time they pull out all stops and rope him in. And if that were to be the case, the Red Devils would’ve already identified a replacement in Ter Stegan.
It’s too early to foretell Ter Stegan swapping Camp Nou for Old Trafford. While he does appear an interesting prospect, United may not jump into signing him if De Gea leaves as there are other options that they might consider before bidding. Keylor Navas included.
