Kante Return to Form: Delight or Dilemma For The Chelsea Boss?

N’Golo Kante went on to play 3 straight games in his natural position finding back his form.

It’s always good for the manager when his key-player finds back his lost form and starts giving solid performances. The manager here is Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and Kante is the player who has found back his groove.

Chelsea knocked out Leicester City in the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday to book their semi-final berth. Chelsea played a very dull game as the players were not looking fresh enough due to the packed schedule. Christian Pulisic was the only Chelsea player who looked a bit sharp going into the attack. And it was Ross Barkley’s goal which saved the day for Lampard.

Though there were quite fewer positives from the game for Lampard, Kante’s form was one of them. Jorginho didn’t play a part against Leicester and the Frenchman played a consecutive 90-minute game.

Lampard must pick wisely for his midfield from the lot.
Lampard has difficult decisions to make in the coming months.

Lampard finally deployed Kante as the deep-lying midfielder which reaped the exact results expected. Kante was back to his responsibilities of winning the ball back and covering the defense. It was Kante who controlled Chelsea’s flow of the game with those slick passes and keeping the possession.

Frank Lampard’s Confusion In Whether To Start Kante Or Jorginho

Kante found back his sparkling form against Leicester in the FA cup.
Kante was almost perfect against Leicester on Sunday.

This was Kante’s third consecutive game in that holding position, the last time he played so regular in that position was under Antonio Conte. Frank Lampard’s faith in putting Kante back to that position has paid off after the midfielder played out a near-perfect game. Kante has been seen as the best holding midfielder in recent years and he showed it exactly why he enjoys the status.

His game by numbers will surely put Lampard in a grave difficult situation whether to play Jorginho or trust Kante. Kante had the highest numbers in passes completed and touches. The midfielder completed 61 passes and had staggering 87 touches to the ball. After suffering a muscle injury during Chelsea’s 3-0 hammering by Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Kante was out for 3 months. The injury derailed his form and Jorginho pounced on that opportunity. The Italian started in Kante’s position and impressed Lampard enough. But now Kante is out there to regain his spot.

Kante’s Return To Form Puts Jorginho’s Future In Doubt

Jorginho was favored by Lampard in Kante’s position and the Italian didn’t disappoint. But since Kante’s return, Jorginho seems as if he has lost his place. In a squad where there are quality midfielders in abundance, Jorginho must keep fighting for his place. Moreover, Lampard played Kante on the right of his three-man midfield when starting him and Jorginho together. Frank Lampard won’t risk Kante’s fine form by again moving him on the right side. This is clear as Jorginho has been dropped for three consecutive matches and Kante restored back to his natural position.

But it is not that Lampard has lost his faith in Jorginho. After Kante played three consecutive 90-minutes, Lampard will now look to rest the Frenchman and start Jorginho. Lampard thinks highly of the Italian and feels he is an integral part of the squad considering his overall skills. But since his arrival, Lampard has not hesitated to make bold decisions.

Juventus in particular has openly shown their interest in signing Jorginho if both the parties strike a deal. The Italian outfit is keen to reunite Jorginho with his former manager Maurizio Sarri with whom he worked at Napoli as well as Chelsea. Sarri highly favors Jorginho as he took him from Napoli to Chelsea. Now Sarri looks to strengthen his midfield after Miralem Pjanic left Juventus for Barcelona. A swap deal is underway between Barcelona and Juventus which saw Barca’s Arthur join the Sarri’s side. If Jorginho leaves, it is clear that Chelsea won’t let him go for cheap.
