The Old Lady are having one of their worst Serie A campaigns in recent seasons. They are third in the league, 12 points adrift of leaders Inter Milan with eight games to go. They were also a victim of a shock Champions League exit in the round of 16 by Porto. And it’s fair to say, manager Andrea Pirlo’s first season in charge of the club has not been up to the mark.
By comparison, United are having a much improved season. After their own shocking exit from the Champions League, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has somewhat steadied the ship. They comfortably sit second in the Premier League and are favorites to win the Europa League.
But both managers know their respective teams need strengthening ahead of next season. As a result, the summer transfer window will be key for both clubs.
Juventus interested in United midfielder
One player who has not enjoyed a good first season at Old Trafford is Donny van de Beek. United completed £40 million for the Dutchman, which was highly praised at that time. But he has struggled to get into the team and has started only two games in the league.
Old Lady were keen admirers of van de Beek during his Ajax days. But they did not make any move before the 23-year old joined Manchester United.
And now according to Italian publication Tuttosport, the Italian giants have re-ignited their interest in van de Beek. So much so that they are willing to send Adrian Rabiot in the opposite direction in order to land van de Beek this summer.
Juventus are in for a new central midfielder with interests in Manuel Locatelli and Jorginho. But Pirlo sees van de Beek as a perfect addition to his midfield ahead of next season.
Van de Beek swap with Rabiot?
Juventus are looking for a summer clear-cut to balance their wage bill. Aaron Ramsey and Paulo Dybala are some of the players the club is looking to move on. This will leave a huge void in the club’s midfield position.
Adrien Rabiot himself is not having the best of seasons and the club could be willing to let him go. This is where van de Beek can come in and solidify his place in Juventus’ midfield. He will also be reunited with his former teammate Matthijs de Ligt.
Meanwhile, United already has box-to-box players in Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, and Fred. They desperately need a holding midfielder, who can sit in front of the defence and dictate the play. And Rabiot can be that player. He is traditionally not a defensive midfielder but he can play in that position very well.
His experience and technical ability would help Pogba and Bruno Fernandes to move up the pitch and join the attack. He can be a natural replacement to Nemanja Matic at the Theatre of Dreams.
