With Manchester City winning the Premier League title with five games left, many expect Manchester United to spend heavily in the summer to catch up.
While a rampant Manchester City has claimed the title with five games to spare, it looks like Manchester United will have to settle for a meagre second place. But even that hasn’t been confirmed with Liverpool looking to have a say in the matter, as they fight for a place in next season’s Champions League. However, despite spending heavily during last summer’s transfer window, Jose Mourinho and company have failed to live-up to their expectations.
The Red Devils were knocked out of the Champions League by a brave and masterful Sevilla performance at Old Trafford and despite producing an incredible comeback against Manchester City to deny them the title at the Eithad Stadium last week, a defeat to West Brom for the Red Devils was all Pep Guardiola’s men needed. However, despite all that their points at 71 is the highest they have achieved since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, but it shows that Manchester United still have work to do on repairing the team.
Jose Mourinho, however, says otherwise and despite spending over 300 million since taking over has insisted that the club will be careful and spend their money consciously, especially given the fact that Manchester City are looking to invest. The former Real Madrid boss brought in the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof, Alexis Sanchez and Nemanja Matic spending 170 million plus Alexis Sanchez’s salary and fee just this season.
“We are not going to spend more than we can. We are not going to do anything crazy,” Mourinho said. “We are just trying to improve a little bit more. That’s what we are going to try. Everybody will try to improve – like we did from last season. Last season we finished sixth and this season we are going to finish, hopefully, second.
“Next season, we are going to try to improve, but let’s see what happens. Maybe also City will invest massively and they don’t let the others close the gap to them, I don’t know,” the three-time Premier League winner further added. “But it is not about us and them, it is about us and them and Liverpool and Arsenal and Chelsea and Spurs. It is not City and United. It is about the six.”
Reports suggest José Mourinho is ready to sell both Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba this summer.

The Old Trafford side has been linked with moves for Real Madrid’s Isco, Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern Munich’s David Alaba, Jousha Kimmich, Thiago Alcantara, Robert Lewandowski and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann, Jan Oblak, Koke and many others.
But the Red Devils could also see the likes of David De Gea, Paul Pogba, Mateo Darmian and Daley Blind potentially leave the club, while Michael Carrick is retiring at the end of the season. However, reports from ESPN have revealed that Mourinho will sign a maximum of four players including a defender and central midfielder, among others.
It’s not spending heavily that will win Manchester United their coveted title, it’s spending money on the right players. That’s exactly what Pep Guardiola did last summer, bringing in reinforcements at full-back, goalkeeper, and even a new right winger. All positions that needed improving. So, in the end, it’s up to Jose Mourinho to figure out what he needs to improve and accordingly spend on players that he knows can do the job.
