Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has warned Liverpool about the Phillipe Coutinho transfer. The Brazilian had just committed to a long-term deal with Liverpool However, in the summer of 2017, Barca relentlessly pursued him to replace Neymar. They finally got their man in the January transfer window of 2018.
As for Liverpool, they decided to spend that money on signing Virgil Van Dijk and Allison. The Reds spent $75 million on Van Dijk which was a record fee then. They again broke the transfer record to sign Allison. At that time there were questions on these two acquisitions.
Jurgen Klopp justified this spending by winning the Champions League and the Premier League. Both these players were very influential in this success as well. Thus Coutinho was now a forgotten man at Anfield. Rather the Reds fans thanked him sarcastically, as because of his sale they were able to sign these two.
During his time with Liverpool, Coutinho had become the talisman for the club. He was often the source of thrust and creativity for the club. Klopp replaced that creativity with his full-backs in Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander Arnold.
Jamie Carragher warning
According to the Liverpool legend, Liverpool is now paying the price of not replacing him. Currently, the Reds are on their worst run of form. Anfield was considered to be a fortress but this season they have already lost six home games.
Not only this in March this season they have only scored one goal, which was a Mo Salah penalty. Jamie Carragher believes that when he watches Liverpool he thinks they are in need of a No.10. He pointed out that Klopp said that Coutinho won’t be missed because of his side’s pressing. But now there is no pressing.
The former Liverpool defender also thinks the Reds are struggling due to the intensity at which they have played for the past 4-5 years. The same players have been playing week in and week out for a long time now, according to Carragher.
The Sky Sports pundit said that perhaps a return of the fans to the stadiums could make a difference for the club. This season, Liverpool has lost six home games and in March they have only scored one goal, which was a Mo Salah penalty. Defensively as well they have been shipping in goals. Today Liverpool lost 0-1 to Chelsea and they were stunned by another 0-1 win by Fulham.
12th Man Opinion
Jurgen Klopp has been often criticized for not focusing on squad depth at Liverpool. The club has always been in a need of a No.9. Firmo has been very good but he has been convincing as a No. 9. It has always been his role as a false No. 9 that has kept him in the team.
Often in his teams, there has been a lack of rotation as well. This season the players had no pre-season and at the start of the season, they lacked match fitness. Thus it was obvious that players would struggle for fitness.
Perhaps due to Klopp’s lack of rotation for a few seasons might have resulted in this. Another thing is that teams have now figured out how to deal with this team. The major source of goals is the crosses from the fullbacks.
Often for the Reds, the pressing would come to the rescue when the full-backs could not create chances. Thiago was signed to be that creative player but so far he has failed to settle in the Premier League. Diego Jota was signed to add depth on the wings, but he was unlucky with injuries.
