Manchester United have been desperate to bring Jadon Sancho to Old Trafford in recent seasons. Last summer they tried very hard to sign. However it was their own miscalculation that they failed to sign him, also Borussia Dortmund refused to reduce thier price tag on him.
Now, The Athletic has reported that the Manchester United will not prioritize signing Sancho next summer. This news comes in the backdrop that the Englishman will be avilable for a lower price. The BVB are now ready to lower thier demand for Sancho. Dortmund needs money as there is no matchday income and the financial crises created by the pandemic.
Despite the Germans reducing their demand for Sancho, Manchester United want to strengthen other areas. It is likely that they might regret this decision. In the summer of 2019, they were the only club that was in the race to sign him. But now more clubs will show interest in the youngster.
This season, Sancho hasn’t hit the heights that he has hit in previous seasons. He started the season very slowly, but in recent games, he has regained his good form. Though he hasn’t been at his best his numbers are still very good with 10 goals and 15 assists in all competitions.
The two areas that Manchester United want to target instead of signing Sancho:
The Athletic has stated that the Premier League giants will try to bring in another centre-back and a striker for next season. Ole Gunnar Solskjear’s side spent heavily on Harry Maguire. He was signed for a world transfer record fee of $85 million. However, he hasn’t been convincing enough and the Red Devils still need another centre-back.
The Englishman’s partner in crime Victor Lindelof and Eric Baily haven’t helped him as well. Lindelof hasn’t performed well consistently while Baily continues to struggle with injuries. Red Devils are in need of a dominant centre-back alongside Maguire.
As for the striker position, Edinson Cavani is not getting any younger. While Anthony Martial despite being given so many chances hasn’t been convincing enough. Cavani was signed on a free transfer from PSG as a short-term option.
Anthony Martial was supposed to be the lead striker but he hasn’t been able to play well consistently. Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood are not proven goalscorers as well. Thus the Red Devils want to sign a striker.
It is the correct decision?
There can hardly be a few players who have started their career so well at the senior level like Sancho. The Englishman is definitely a special talent. Perhaps people are sometimes too harsh to judge and they forget that he is only 20 years old.
As for Manchester United, they won’t get any better time to sign a player like him. Dortmund are willing to negotiate and lower their demand and they are in driving seat to qualify for Champions League. There will never be an any better time to sign their long-term target.
If they miss out on him this time, perhaps a team like Chelsea might sign him. Though there is no doubt that they are in need of another centre-back and centre-forward However despite problems in this area they have done so well this season.
The right-wing is also a problematic position for the Red Devils. They need a proper right winger as well. The arrival of Sancho will only strengthen their team. As for a centre-back and a striker perhaps United could sign them on loan with a compulsory option to buy.
