Chelsea have joined the race for AS Roma’s Alessandro Florenzi

The Blues continue to press on with their transfer targets despite an uncertain managerial situation. After Clement Lenglet, Chelsea are said to be interested in another defender. Italian right-back, Alessandro Florenzi is the latest player to have caught the eye of Chelsea higher-ups according to Football Italia.

A homegrown product, Florenzi is being touted as the next Roma captain. However, his current deal lasts only until the end of next season and he is yet to agree on a contract extension according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. Roma are unwilling to bow down to the player’s wage demands of around €4 million per year. Reportedly the negotiations have been going on for months.

Chelsea are the latest club to join the race for Florenzi. Italian heavyweights Juventus, Inter and Milan are already monitoring the 27-year-old’s precarious situation at the Olimpico. The player contributed to 2 goals and 5 assists for Roma in a number of positions. He is capable of functioning all across the right flank – as a right winger as well as a right back. In fact, versatility is one of his biggest selling points.

Florenzi also showed great mental strength, making 45 appearances this season, after returning from a cruciate ligament injury that kept him out of action for a period of 10 months from October ’16 to August ’17.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will need to focus on getting their managerial situation sorted to appease the already restless fan base.

Author’s Take

It has been a tough few weeks for Chelsea. Despite being linked with a number of candidates, the club’s manager is no closer to being finalised. The owner, Roman Abramovich has never appeared to be as disinterested as he is now. The fans will only be hoping for some stability in the near future. In the meantime, a new high-profile signing will be a great short-term fix.
