Amid the speculation regarding Antonio Conte’s future at Chelsea, the Italian boss has arrived at the club for the start of the pre-season.
Chelsea endured a rather frustrating season last term in the Premier League as they finished fifth on the table. The West London club will not be eligible to play in the Champions League next term after missing out on a top 4 spot. More embarrassingly, Chelsea suffered humiliating defeats to Newcastle, Watford, and Bournemouth which put manager Antonio Conte’s job on the line. And even after winning the FA Cup against fierce rivals Manchester United in the final, Conte was still seen as a dead man walking at Chelsea.
Conte Leaving Or Staying?
There have been plenty of reports that have linked Conte being sacked from Chelsea this summer with a number of different managers set to take up the potential job if a vacancy arises. Former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri is the most likely candidate to Conte’s successor and there are several links that are relating the 59-year-old having meetings with the Chelsea board.
Sarri guided Napoli to a 2nd place finish in the Serie A last season almost winning the Italian title but the Partenopei replaced him with Carlo Ancelotti.
But one factor that is blocking Chelsea from sacking Conte this summer is the fact that they would have to pay him £9 million as compensation with his release clause for one more year. However, Conte has already arrived at Chelsea in order for the club’s pre-season campaign with their first game on July 23rd in Australia. The 48-year-old won the Premier League title in his first year as Chelsea boss in 2017 and then guided them to the FA Cup in May.
As much as it would pain a Chelsea fan to see Conte being sacked, there needs to be some confirmation of the managerial situation at Stamford Bridge soon because other rival clubs have already begun their training and getting sorted for the next season.
