The fourth game of the IPL 2021 turned out to be one of the entertaining run-fest as both teams gave absolutely everything with the bat. The Wankhede Stadium witnessed both sides scoring 200+ in their quota of 20 overs.
Earlier, Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson won the toss and opted to bowl first. Punjab Kings converted all the opportunities effectively and turned them into big numbers. KL Rahul top-scored with 91 off 50 balls.
Punjab Kings captain smashed 7 boundaries and 5 maximums at an outstanding strike rate of 182. Chris Gayle chipped in with 40 off 28 balls including 4 fours and 2 sixes. However, it was Deepak Hooda who stunned everyone.
The right-handed batsman showed no mercy as he went on to smash 64 off 28 balls with the help of 4 fours and 6 sixes. Punjab Kings bowlers were hit across all parts of the park as Hooda maintained a strike rate of 228.57.
Chetan Sakariya who made his IPL debut against Rajasthan Royals had a superb match. The bowler not only took 3 wickets to his name but also grabbed a scorcher to dismiss Nicholas Pooran.
On the other hand, Chris Morris took 2 wickets to his name. Riyan Parag who bowled just one over managed to get rid of Christopher Henry Gayle. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings aggregated 221/6 in their allotted quota of 20 overs.
Blue layer on the cricket ball leaves everyone in confusion in IPL
Rajasthan Royals got off to a worst start as they lost Ben Stokes and Manan Vohra in the first and third over respectively. However, it was the captain Sanju Samson who stuck to the basics and went about his business.
Samson didn’t get complete support from the other batsmen except for a 53-run stand with Shivam Dube and a 52-run stand with Riyan Parag. When Samson was getting into the groove, all of a sudden, a mysterious blue coating was spotted on the ball.
It came to the limelight during the TV replay when Sanju Samson was adjudged out by the on-field umpire. When the skipper took a review, the third umpire learnt that the ball was not hitting the wicket.
The third umpire asked Anil Chaudhary to overturn his decision. Meanwhile, in the replay, it was revealed that there was a blue coating on the ball. The fans, commentators were confused as they came up with opinions on social media.
Meanwhile, the analysts on Select Dugout reckoned that it could have been some blue paint from the advertising board or boundary ropes when Rajasthan Royals batsman Jos Buttler thumped a six.
Punjab Kings clinch the thriller
Sanju Samson scored a sensational century and almost steered the team to victory. But, in the end, Punjab Kings managed to get back into the game. Punjab Kings won the game by 4 runs. Samson ended up with 119 off 63 balls (12 fours, 7 sixes).
