Liverpool finally making a move to solve their defensive problems.
It has been a really bad season for the champions. From winning the Premier League to ending up fighting for a top-four finish, it probably couldn’t be any worse for Liverpool. But it would be wrong to blame the manager as the club has had an injury-stricken season.
Liverpool saw their defenders getting injured one by one up until the point where Milner and Henderson had to slot in as center backs for the club. Virgil Van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Joe Gomes all 3 of their senior defenders are out.
There were calls from the club to sign a fresh recruit in the summer window. But due to the financial impact of Covid 19 Liverpool weren’t able to make a move. However, Jurgen Klopp is slowly chipping away at the problem.
The Reds acquired Ozan Kabak on loan till the end of the season from Schalke. Kabak has been good for the club and they still have to make a decision on whether to seek a permanent deal for him.
However, there is one more exciting news for the Liverpool fans. The club has been linked with a move for RB Leipzig’s defender Ibrahim Konate. Liverpool has been monitoring him for quite some time now.
There were links of a move last summer too but it seems more probable this time out. The 21-year-old center back looks set for a move to Merseyside as per the latest reports
Ibrahim Konate completes medical, a move to Anfield on the cards
Konate has been one of the consistent performers for Leipzig since joining the German club. Since his arrival in 2017, he has been a part of 89 club games for the Bundesliga side.
It would be safe to say he is one of the pillars in Leipzig’s defensive stronghold. This season however hasn’t been kind to Konate as he has been restricted to just 15 appearances due to injury problems.
However, the player looks to have regained his fitness as he completed his medical tests. According to reports from The Athletic, the deal is already in advanced stages and is likely to pull through for Liverpool.
Konate would surely be a good acquisition as both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are out till August for Liverpool. He can develop a long-term partnership with Van Dijk if given the chance.
Although there is still no official confirmation for us. We will have to wait for that as there are still ways that this could go sideways. Konate has 2 more years on his contract with Leipzig.
His current transfer value is close to a figure of $30 million and Leipzig can play hardball with Liverpool. Liverpool were favorites for Timo Werner to but he ended up going to Chelsea. The reds will hope it doesn’t go that way in Konate’s pursuit.
