Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired from Manchester United, the Red Devils turned themself into big money spenders. Established names such as David Moyses, Louis Van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho spent big money. However, it only bought them little success.
Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer they decided to change their strategy. Instead of just spending big, they also started to focus on their youth academy players. Youth became the way for the club.
The likes of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood were given more prominent roles in the first team. Despite this, the Red Devils haven’t been shy of spending big. But currently, the football world is still facing the financial wrath caused by the pandemic.
It is possible that by the end of next season some fans may return to the stadiums. Though it won’t help the clubs to generate a lot of income. United will also try to be more economical next summer and they also want to improve their squad.
The two positions where United want to improve is the right-back position and the defensive midfield. Currently, they have Aaron Wan Bissaka and Nemanjic Matic in that position. The Red Devils should add more competition for these places next season.
In order to add more competition for these places, the young duo of James Garner and Ethan Laird could be given a chance next season. Garner is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest.
He has been very impressive in the Championship. The youngster has been praised for his attacking display from the right-back position. While Wan Bissaka hasn’t really displayed a lot of attacking intent this season. On the other hand, Matic is not getting any younger.
Laird was included in the Europa League squad as well. He could be the long-term replacement for the former Chelsea midfielder. Even for Manchester United money will be tight. They will only have the luxury to spend big on one position.
Often when clubs become successful, it becomes difficult for young players to get into the team. Manchester United are in the process of becoming a successful team. Solskjaer might prefer to express over youth.
Last season United qualified for the Championship League. This season they are looking convincing and they are likely to qualify for the Champions League. The Red Devils would want to carry forward this momentum next season.
In order to do that they will need quality players over talented youngsters. The likes of Chelsea, Leicester City, Tottenham, etc. are likely to come back stronger. If they are able to do well this season, they might struggle next season.
An economical solution could include swap deals or a compulsory buy clause in the loan agreements. This way United can add instant quality and experience without spending a lot of money as well.
