Ex-Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has blasted star forward Alexis Sanchez, after a poor performance in the FA Cup final.
The Red Devils were favorites to win the FA Cup final on Saturday, facing a Chelsea side that had finished a disappointing 5th. But as a sport would have it, the Blues overcame United after Eden Hazard converted from the spot to ensure that Chelsea lifted the oldest cup competition in football.
And while Chelsea talisman Hazard had much of an impact on the game, his opposite number Alexis Sanchez failed to do so. The Chilean has struggled to put together a string of quality performances, and wasn’t able to showcase any of his brilliance in the most important and final game of the season.
There was a buzz around Old Trafford when Sanchez signed for the club but the Red half of Manchester have not been able to reap the rewards of his services just yet. This has caused some frustration and unrest in the city. The loss in the FA Cup final meant that United went trophyless this season and former Red Devil Paul Scholes was not too impressed with Sanchez’ display.
Scholes Questions Sanchez’ Outings-
Speaking to BT Sport the former England international drew comparisons to Hazard and Sanchez with the former coming under heavy scrutiny, Scholes opened up on Sanchez, “His performances, well they have to improve. They can’t get any worse to be honest with you. I think the first few games of next season are vital to him; he needs to get fans believing again and believing they are going to get close to City. They need a big player. Do they [have big players]? Paul Pogba does not win you games on his own. [Eden] Hazard does. Alexis Sanchez doesn’t, he’s shown that since January, they thought he could, but what we’ve seen.”
Sachez has netted just thrice in 18 outings so far and the United faithful will hope that he finds his goalscoring touch soon enough next season.
I don’t think it’s fair for Sanchez to get all the blame because from Scholes. It was Jose Mourinho who set up the team and it seems like the Portuguese boss isn’t able to bring out the best in the attacking winger. Yes, he was poor in the final but I believe that United have not utilized Sanchez properly. He has proven his worth in the past in an Arsenal shirt, and I’m sure provided the right tactics he will prove so again.
