Arsenal midfielder Guendouzi risks punishment from the FA after involving in a brawl with Maupay.
Arsenal faced Brighton on Saturday in a heated clash with players from both sides who were involved in an altercation. This was Arsenal’s second game after the Premier League’s resumption, with their first one against Manchester City. Arsenal needed to bounce back after going down 3-0 to City in order to finish in the European places. The game against Brighton looked like 3 points in the bag for Arsenal. Before it turned out a complete breakdown involving Matteo Guendouzi.
Arsenal started on the strong foot, with a lineup starring Aubameyang, Lacazette, and Nicolas Pepe. After the first half of missed chances, Pepe finally hit a wonderful curler to give Arsenal the lead. But the lead was short-lived as Brighton’s captain Lewis Dunk scored the leveler with 15 minutes remaining in the game. To add to the misery, Neal Maupay chipped home the winner in the 95th minute. Brighton marks their first game since the turn of the year.
Arsenal lost their in-form keeper Bernd Leno in the first half to a serious knee injury. The German keeper landed awkwardly after a mid-air collision with Neal Maupay in the Arsenal box. Leno was stretchered off in the 40th minute. But the keeper didn’t hold back his feelings as he gave out some words to Maupay while departing.
But it didn’t end for Maupay here. The Brighton striker was then involved in a heated exchange with Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi. Guendouzi took out his frustration at the striker after the full-time whistle was blown. Guendouzi set the events in motion when he swings his hand into Maupay’s stomach in the last minutes. Maupay fell on the ground though it didn’t seem Guendouzi caused him serious injury.
FA Could Press Charges Of Misconduct On Matteo Guendouzi
Arsenal players were already furious at Maupay when his collision with Leno resulted in the keeper suffering a knee injury. It would probably keep him out for the season. After Maupay’s stoppage-time winner, an on-field altercation between Arsenal players and Brighton players ensued. Images and videos from the altercation afterward revealed a shocking incident. Matteo Guendouzi seems to have caught Maupay by his throat.
The FA said that they are waiting for referee Martin Atkinson’s match report to see whether he includes the incident. The FA are unsure about if the referee saw the incident and didn’t take any action. If it happens to be so, Guendouzi should be prepared to face strict action from the FA. Nonetheless, the FA can still investigate the incident if it is not included in Atkinson’s report.
It is now to be seen for how many games Guendouzi will be banned. Should the matter be resolved before coming Thursday, Guendouzi would miss Arsenal’s trip to Southampton. Guendouzi’s suspension would only add to Arsenal’s long list of unavailable players for the game. Arsenal’s injury and suspension list includes Bernd Leno, Pablo Mari, Granit Xhaka, Sokratis, Torreira, Cedric Soares, and David Luiz.
Brighton’s Maupay also called out the Arsenal players after the game. Maupay said: “Arsenal players need to learn humility! They have been talking a lot since being 1-0 up. They got what they deserved”.
Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta responded to Maupay’s comments in a confident manner. In the post-match interview, Arteta said “He (Maupay) can say whatever he wants. I know my players and one aspect they do not lack is humility”.
Guendouzi has been involved in previous occasions
This is not the first time that Matteo Guendouzi is involved in an on-field brawl. The midfielder was caught in a heated argument with Delle Ali in the North London Derby. When Spurs met last September, in a pulsating 2-2 draw Guendouzi took it to Ali in a physical battle. The players escaped a suspension since it was not much of a heated battle.
