The elite Blaugrana defender wants the club to make a move for this forward, whose exploits in Galicia have apparently impressed him
It took 23 league goals and the distinction of being the most prolific Spaniard in Europe for the season for Iago Aspas to confirm his debut in an international competition. The Celta Vigo striker is 31, but has earned only 10 international caps. His impressive form last season though, convinced Julen Lopetegui to take him to Russia. And it seems very soon, he may be on his way to a bigger club too.
Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique is apparently impressed by the striker, and is trying to convince the board to push a move for him. The Spanish champions are reportedly doing away with the disappointing Paco Alcacer, and bringing a new figure upfront. Even if Antoine Griezmann is in a prime position, Barcelona would have someone else to go after if the move doesn’t materialise.
And this is a reasonable choice too. Aspas has dumped the struggles of his Liverpool days into the dustbin of history and resurrected his career since joining Celta Vigo in 2015. No other Spanish player has scored more than the 55 league goals he’s accrued since. And that’s exactly why Pique is so enthusiastic about having him at Barcelona.
In what’s set to be a summer of massive overhaul, Barcelona are linked with a whole raft of players. Aspas isn’t one of them as some of the top guns including Griezmann are the first-choice. But a senior player like Pique’s intervention would turn the screw. The Griezmann saga looks headed for a collapse after reports of the player staying put at Atletico Madrid, in Aspas, Barcelona won’t have to look far for a new option.
Aspas would definitely be a great addition, but he needs to start regularly. Barcelona’s attack is already packed after the arrival of Dembele, while another addition would spell selection headaches for manager Ernesto Valverde.
