Gerard Pique taunted Ousmane Dembele about how much he cost the club, during the celebration after winning the Copa Del Rey 2021.
Veteran Blaugrana defender Gerard Pique turned heads as he teased Ousmane on Saturday after their victory in the Cup Final. He mentioned his price tag while shoving him out a picture with the trophy, albeit jokingly.
Barcelona defeated Athletic Club Bilbao by 4 goals in the Copa Del Rey final. It was the first trophy for the club since their last one came back in April 2019. The long wait and tough times that the club had to endure between these two triumphs proved worth it as they ended their title drought that lasted for 720 days. And the celebrations surrounding the trophy were a bit more spirited than usual, and quite rightly so.
The said incident happened when the players that have graduated from La Masia were taking a picture with the cup. As Barcelona’s homegrown talents posed to take a photo, Dembele tried to sneak in the frame. It was at that point where Gerard Pique taunted the Frenchman before shoving him out.
A Playful Jeer taken sportingly
Posing for the camera with the trophy were Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto, Jordi Alba, AnsuFati, Ronald Araujo, Riqui Puig, Ilaix Moriba, and ArnauTenas, all of whom have been brought up from the youth ranks of Barcelona and their coveted La Masia academy.
As Ousmane tried to sneak in, Busquets caught him by his shirt and proceeded to drag him out. After all, it was the La Masia gang’s photo and Dembele was nothing more than a photobomber.
This prompted Pique, who was standing towards the middle, to come over to the edge. The Spaniard jokingly pushed Dembele aside while saying, “Get out of here! You cost the club too much.”
This was a sly dig at the transfer fees that were required to bring Dembele to the club. In the summer of 2017, erstwhile President JosepBartomeu secured the services of Dembele for a whopping 135 million Euros. The huge amount paid to his former club Borussia raised certain eyebrows.
And in all honesty, Dembele is yet to prove his worth in the Barcelona colors. Ousmane has now been at the club for over 3 seasons and is nearing the end of his contract. However, for a player that has been at the club for so long, Dembele has massively underperformed.
With an injury-plagued career, the Frenchman has only made 112 appearances for Barca, registering a meager 49 goal contributions. Although he has impressed a bit this season. The most surprising part is that Ousmane has managed to stay injury-free until this point. If he manages to keep it up till June, this may be his first injury-free season at the club.
Despite his improvements, Dembele is still yet to impress on a consistent basis in terms of performance. However, Ousmane is not the only big-money signing that has flopped. Philippe Coutinho, who was signed for a record 165 million Euros from Liverpool in the same season, is there too. Besides the Brazilian, Antoine Griezmann is also one such player.
After completing a move from Atletico for 120 million Euros in 2019, Griezmann’s record is a bit better though. Despite heavily underperforming in his first season, Antoine has recovered massively this season. However, the harsh truth is that it is because of these huge transfers that Barcelona finds itself in a debt crisis of almost 1.2 billion Euros.
