Fans give a strong reply to the statement by Gautam Gambhir against MS Dhoni.
Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir recently participated in a poll by ESPNCricinfo. In that poll, he had to pick the better captain between Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni. He said that he picked Ganguly over Dhoni because Dada gave away players who are much better than what MS Dhoni gave away.
Former legends like Graeme Smith, Kumar Sangakkara and former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth also participated in the poll. All of them had different criteria to decide the better captain between Dhoni and Ganguly. One of them was the quality of players they produced.
Gambhir said that MS Dhoni has not produced enough matchwinners for his successor Virat Kohli. He pointed out that Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah are the only matchwinners produced by Dhoni.
On the other hand, Dada produced star matchwinners like Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag.
“When MS Dhoni finished (his captaincy stint), he hasn’t given enough quality players to Virat Kohli, apart from Virat Kohli himself and Rohit Sharma. Or Jasprit Bumrah now. There are not too many world-beaters or probably people who win you tournaments,” said Gautam Gambhir.
“But look at what Sourav Ganguly gave to Indian cricket. Yuvraj Singh, the man of the series in two World Cups (Yuvraj was the only man of the series in the 2011 World Cup. Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag – these kinds of world-beaters,” he added.
However, Dhoni fans were not happy with his statement. They expressed their displeasure against the remark by Gambhir on Dhoni. They responded to his statement and also started pointing him out the world-class players that Dhoni left behind when he stepped down from captaincy. One such MS Dhoni fan also tweeted the names of the world-class players that Dhoni produced.
Ganguly and Dhoni had a different approach in leading the team on the field
Both Ganguly and Dhoni had different styles when it comes to leading their teams on the field. Both of them are two of the most successful captains in Indian cricket history.
Dhoni’s record as a captain is unmatched. He is the only captain in cricket history to win all three ICC trophies. On the other hand, Ganguly brought about the winning mentality in a broken team.
Ganguly taught the team to win matches anywhere in the world. Under him, the team won Tests series in Pakistan, Zimbabwe and also won Test matches in England and Australia. He won the Natwest trophy as a captain and also led India to the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003.
On the other hand, MS Dhoni took India to the number 1 Test rankings for the first time. His team won Test series in New Zealand and also won Test matches in South Africa and England. Both of them have given so much to Indian cricket. Hence, it is unfair to compare both of them.
