Manchester United broke the bank in the summer of 2019 by signing Leicester defender Harry Maguire on a record fee of £80 million. The transfer made him the highest-paid defender in Premier League. The arrival of Maguire into the defensive line of Red Devils wasn’t considered as a correct choice in the beginning.
But, later he got good impressions in the squad and became a key figure in the defensive formation of United. He became the captain of the team under Ole Gunner Solskjaer. The centre-back partnership of Maguire with Victor Lindelof was the first line option for United.
Meanwhile, the last two transfer windows added talks related to this partnership. And most of the voices suggested a replacement for Lindelof to unleash the full potential of Maguire. There were multiple opinions among pandits about who is important for United, Maguire or Lindelof.
As the season campaign got an upgraded version of challenges, United started to revisit their squad with an impression of champions. The transfer talks of the summer transfer window of 2021 speculate a possible replacement for Lindelof in order to focus on Maguire next season.
Paul Parker slams Harry Maguire:
Manchester United former defender Paul Parker got a different drawing out of the entire situation. Speaking to Grand National, he said that Lindelof should be given more focus than Maguire. Also, he wanted a complete replacement of the pair in the backline.
“Despite the position that Manchester United find themselves in the Premier League, they still need to strengthen in the transfer market this summer.
Regarding the center-backs, people talk about bringing in a new partner for Harry Maguire. But, I would look at bringing in two centre backs, why can’t it be a player who comes in and plays alongside Victor Lindelof?
“Harry Maguire is not a leader, he plays the game for himself. He sits way too deep, he dribbles for the sake of dribbling and runs himself into cul-de-sacs.
“I have always been unsure about Maguire since the day Manchester United signed him. When they paid £80m, the club didn’t buy an £80m center-back, it was great business by Leicester City,” he continued. (talkSPORT)
The Summer is serious for Manchester United:
Manchester United already hinted at the summer moves by targeting Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane. The three-time Champions League winner is out of contract in the summer of 2022 in Madrid. Los Blancos haven’t revealed up an extension plan and there are rumors regarding his summer switch.
The 27-year-old World Cup winner is highly influential in the backline of Zinedine Zidane. And the Frenchmen is the ideal option for United to pair-up with Harry Maguire. But, leaving Varane in the summer would be a suicidal move from Florentino Perez. Also, the captain Sergio Ramos is expected to leave the camp this summer.
Finding a new centre-back pair would be difficult for Madrid as they are lagging behind in that department in the campaign. For United, winning the deal could serve the purpose and can try a new defensive strategy. The summer would solve the puzzle as the tough fixtures are remaining for teams.
