Eric Abidal will be taking over from Robert Fernandez as the Sporting Director of FC Barcelona on the 18th of July, with the La Liga giants not willing to offer the latter a new contract.
The story was confirmed by a recent claim by Goal, which suggested that the former France international would be stepping up from his role as ambassador.
The 38-year-old star who himself played as a left back, will be taking this role for the 2018-19 season and the statement about this decision was released on Thursday.
Fernandez was criticized for the sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain, which could play a key role in the fact that he has not been offered an extension.
Further, Abidal, who took the role of an ambassador for the club in 2017, will now be given a new job (promotion) by the Nou Camp based side.
The Frenchman previously played for Barca between 2007 and 2013, until he was diagnosed with a serious illness and could not contribute more towards the end of his time as a player.
He eventually his best to contribute towards the well-being of the team after his recovery, in any possible way and now that has been given a new offer, he has taken it.
A statement made by the club read:
“Barcelona announces that Robert Fernandez will not extend his contract as the football first team technical secretary which runs out on June 30 of this year.”
“The club would like to thank Robert Fernandez publicly for his commitment and dedication to Barcelona over the years and wishes him success in the future.”
With Barca winning the league this term, their ambitions of lifting more titles are clear and hopefully, their former star can contribute in making that dream a reality in the seasons to follow.
The ex Olympiacos and Monaco man has been a loyal servant for the Catalan giants in the past and has helped them win titles, during his time at the club. He has done a good job as their ambassador as well, it can be said and will now cherish this new role that has been given to him. There is still time till he officially takes over the job, though it seems to be a step in the right direction.
Abidal was a kind of player who would give his all on the pitch and if given such a role could really flourish now. Hopefully, he can deliver according to the expectations.
