Arsenal was seen taking on Rapid Vienna on Thursday in their UEFA Europa League opener. However, there were several blunders taken into notice by Bernd Leno and Sead Kolasinac.
The Gunners were lucky to pull off a winning comeback even though the results could have been very different. But somehow Arsenal managed to edge past the Austrian side in an opener.
Arsenal enjoyed a 2-1 win and only conceded a goal against Vienna. Both the clubs have an unpredictable start and Arsenal had that dominance over the ball throughout the game. The Gunners even created multiple chances but couldn’t really hit the spot except for one. This gives Vienna the chance to enter the defense of Arsenal and make rapid counter-attacks.
It wasn’t an easy win for Arsenal on Thursday but Arsenal made it. Interestingly Mesut Ozil omission Saga was only dominating the headlines until the pre-match. But Arsenal has their attention fixed elsewhere and the game changed it all when several howlers were taken into notice.
The first howler came from Bernd Leno who looked agitated throughout the game with his distribution. Leno’s short pass within the penalty area was taken away by Taxiarchis Fountas which gave the Austrian side take the lead. The pass from inside the penalty area was like a gift to the opposition club who clearly made it finish with no mistake in between. After a series of attacks, Arsenal found a way past Vienna’s defense.
But the scoring winner from David Luiz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang helped Arsenal start their European journey with a win. Arsenal only conceded a goal but the very howler from Bernd Leno cost them very much. The German goalkeeper also made three saves and one of them was worth praising.
Sead Kolasinac Europa League outing
Another man who became a center of criticism and who might have really got on Arteta’s nerves was Sead Kolasinac. His Thursday night performance would have pushed the club to think of ways they could have done in order to offload him in the summer.
It was another careless game for Sead Kolasinac as he began on the left of Arsenal’s defense. Even though he made several failed attempts to push himself in the game.
But his attempts were not good enough to make runs that could have agitated the opposition backline. Moreover, the Bosnia international looked very nervy in the second half. He ended up taking the same space as Bukayo Saka and often the duo ended up getting in each other’s way.
As per Sofascore, Sead Kolasinac made zero tackles, just one interception, and lost the possession over 16 times throughout the game. Whenever he got the possessions at his feet. He looked often confused by either playing it down the line or coming back with the ball inside.
On the basis of Kolasinac Thursday night performance, it would have been better if the transfer deal wouldn’t have been collapsed. During the summer transfer window, the Bosnian was very close to taking an exit from the Emirates with strong interest from Bayer Leverkusen.
However, it was in the final few days of the window that the defender decided to extend his stay.
