The death of the beautiful game as we know it is near. The big money clubs have ensured the thrill, the passion of the game is destroyed right in front of our eyes. History, legacy, heartbreak, success- everything that the FANS and not the greedy owners have brought into the clubs are of no use now. Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has expressed his thoughts on this topic as well.
In an unprecedented move that could result in the death of football as we know it, 12 European heavyweight clubs have decided to come together and launch the newly founded European Super League. These 12 clubs also involve the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Manchester City.
The twelve clubs – Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan have decided to start this new midweek competition called ESL.
This is an extraordinary situation that will completely destroy the European football structure. Moreover, this new competition structure abolishes the fact that smaller teams can also aim for the highest.
A complete monopoly created wherein only the elite clubs will compete against each other. Hence it basically guarantees them a position in the ESL regardless of how they perform in their respective domestic leagues and tournaments.
Thereby the question arises – what good does it do? What even is this European Super League’s purpose? The answer, the unquenchable thirst for money of these so-called ‘big’ clubs. Nothing else.
Rio Ferdinand furious with the newly proposed European Super League
Just like many other football fans around the world, Rio Ferdinand has spoken about this newly founded ESL. Ferdinand says that he feels ashamed of being a Manchester United fan.
The ESL has already generated immense criticism. Players, fans, pundits, and critics alike disgusted with the league. It is already facing a huge backlash. Moreover, Manchester United legend Alex Ferguson has spoken about it as well.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville went full-on ballistic about it. Neville in a passionate rant said that all of the big clubs should be punished for accepting such an idea. He says that clubs like Liverpool have beliefs such as You’ll Never Walk Alone is only in writing.
Rio Ferdinand is a pundit on BT Sport. After yesterday’s FA Cup semifinal between Leicester City and Southampton FC, he got the news of the newly founded European Super League.
“It’s a closed shop for these bigwigs and it’s completely and utterly only about one thing and that’s money. “How they’ve got the audacity to do it in the climate we’re in at the moment… the pandemic around the world. People are struggling all over the world, and this lot…colluding with this idea that they’ve hatched – and to break it like this.
“The element of being anti-competitive goes against everything football is about. It screams (that) these people have no idea what football’s about. It’s purely a business transaction. The people who make this game special not considered.”
