European top clubs join the race for Leicester’s England full-back 22.

Tottenham along with the two Spanish giants are chasing for Leicester’s Ben Chilwell.

Tottenham Hotspur have held a longstanding interest in Leicester City 22-year old left-back Ben Chilwell. This dates back to last summer. With the summer transfer window just around the corner, Tottenham could re-enter the race for Chilwell, who is enjoying a fine season for Leicester.

But they now face competition from two Spanish heavyweights. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are now in the hunt for the £50m defender after his stunning England display. Both La Liga giants have tracked his progress in the Premier League and sent representatives to watch him against Czech Republic during the last international break.

Atletico Madrid see the attack-minded left-back as a replacement for veteran Filipe Luis who had veteran Juanfran playing at left-back in their recent Champions League defeat to Juventus, while Barcelona want the England defender to compete with Jordi Alba.

Chilwell has played 30 games for Leicester this season and has been a key part of their success. The England international also appears to have jumped above Danny Rose in Gareth Southgate’s pecking order.

Spurs Manager Mauricio Pochettino

And this should alert Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, who could look for an upgrade at left-back. Rose and Ben Davies share the left-back responsibilities but improvements could be made. Chilwell would be the ideal long-term option for Pochettino and he could be Rose’s successor for both Tottenham and England.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid’s interest should prompt Spurs to urgently take an action as they cannot allow the 22-year-old to move to Spain as he should be a summer priority.

Author’s take:

The England defender signed a new deal at the club last October which landed him £115,000-a-week and means the Foxes will ask for top-dollar for their star. Brendan Rodgers is determined to keep the England defender but now the European top clubs are after him it would be difficult to hold him for long. The 22-year-old has played 27 times this season for the Foxes and looks set for a bright future.
