The Barcelona star has been instrumental in Barcelona’s triumphs in the past but wants to taste new challenges. Valverde is still counting on him to stay at the club.
Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen is enduring a difficult spell in Barcelona. The goalkeeper of Dutch origins has been irregularly used by Ernesto Valverde. He was instrumental for Barcelona in their last two Copa del Rey victories, but has never had a chance in the La Liga or Champions League.
He had admitted at the end of the last season that there was a need for him to find regular playing time and that the best place for him to do so was away from Barcelona. He was linked with moves away from Spain, especially to Liverpool, who eventually managed to bag Alisson Becker’s services. Barcelona are happy with Cillessen’s conduct and commitment even though he wants to leave the club and are ready to let him go for lesser than his price tag.
However, manager Ernesto Valverde spoke about the Dutch shot stopper and said how important he was for the upcoming season. Yet, the former Athletic Bilbao boss remained tight lipped about whether he would give Cillessen the nod ahead of Ter Stegen in the Spanish Super Cup.
“I’ve spoken with Cillesen but I can’t reveal what was said at a press conference. He’s clearly someone we can rely on,” added Valverde ahead of the match against Sevilla on Sunday evening. He’s a player we value from every perspective and we want him to stay. We want two goalkeepers of the highest level.”
The 29-year-old was signed by Barcelona from Ajax Amsterdam in the summer of 2016 after Claudio Bravo’s departure to Manchester City. Unfortunately, Cillessen has not been able to gun down a regular role at the Camp Nou. Despite the player’s desire to leave and offers on the table, the Catalan giants have a huge decision to make.
Barcelona have shortlisted Simon Mignolet as Cillessen’s replacement but the Liverpool goalie will certainly be a downgrade. Valverde has to find a solution to keep the Dutchman happy or sell him for the best interests of both parties.
