Erling Haaland is one of Europe’s top prospects this summer. Ever since he broke out on the big stage, Haaland has taken the footballing world by storm.
His stats and figures were impressive enough at RB Salzburg. After he completed his move to Borussia Dortmund, the striker has taken a massive step forward in his career.
In his first season at the German outfit, Erling Haaland scored 13 goals in 15 appearances. He added to that an impressive 41 and 12 assists goals in 43 games in the current 2020-21 season.
His monstrous performances have drawn admirable glances from top clubs across Europe, with many heavily intent on securing his services. Barcelona are obviously among one of them.
The player’s agent, Mino Raiola is known to be a close associate of the current Barcelona President Joan Laporta. And this has flared debates that Barca may be leading the race to sign the Norwegian.
However, there are certain complications which do make it difficult for the Catalans to pull off a move like that. Their financial troubles are the biggest among them all.
Borussia Dortmund has asked for a total price of 150 million Euros as the player’s transfer fee. Any club that is willing to swoop Haaland is obliged to pay the required amount.
That big sum has made it practically impossible for the Blaugrana to secure the player this year. Especially keeping in mind that they are neck-deep in debt. And their current outstanding loan amount stands at roughly 1.2 billion Euros.
Besides, Barca have prioritized renewing the contract of Lionel Messi, which runs out on the 30th of June this year. That alone would require quite a big amount although reports suggest that Messi is willing to accept a salary reduction.
Erling Haaland has made his intentions clear as of now
However, it looks like Erling Haaland is not quite intent on leaving his club right now. And he has dropped a hint about that. Speaking in an interview with Jan-Age Fjortoft, Haaland said, “Borussia Dortmund saying I’m 100% staying this summer? I have a contract with BVB so I’ll be respectful. The Champions League spot is secured and that was so important to me. I want to play Champions League football.”
Obviously, securing a ticket to the European competitions was the most important thing to the 20-year-old striker. At one point in the season, it looked as if Borussia might miss out on the 4th place following a run of poor results.
But EdinTerzic’s men seemed to pull it off in the end in a dramatic fashion. On top of that, the Black and Yellows won the domestic Cup to secure a decent end to the campaign. As of now, it seems impossible that Haaland will move from Borussia. But the scenes may change next year. From the summer of 2022, Haaland’s 75-million-Euro release clause gets activated. Something that would bring the player within the reaches of a cash-strapped Barcelona.
