James Maddison has been a recent subject of transfer interest for Arsenal. The Gunners are desperately looking for players with creative attributes following several departures from the squad.
The young central-attacking midfielder has been one of the brightest spots in the resurgent Leicester side that have been knocking on the big six’s door. Ever since making his debut in the 2017-18 season, he has gone onto win the FA Cup and been on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League as well. His creativity, link-up play, and set-piece ability make him an ideal candidate to have in the team.
While rumours link him to a potential move to the Emirates, former Leicester player and England legend Gary Lineker, has a piece of advice. Lineker warned Maddison that a move to Arsenal would be a backward step in his career.
“From my experience, taking a backward step never ends well. @Madders10” he tweeted. Gary Lineker announced his retirement from broadcasting to watch Leicester play in Europe this season. The recently concluded Euro 2020 was his final assignment.
Arsenal are in a dire need of a playmaker
Mikel Arteta is on the lookout for a creative first-team player to solve his woes. The short-term impact brought on by Martin Odegaard was a breath of fresh air for the club.
Odegaard was an asset during his stint at the club, but the Norway International now finds himself back at Real Madrid. Newly appointed coach Carlo Ancelotti intends to use the playmaker more than his predecessor Zinedine Zidane.
His departure, along with the likes of Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka, leaves a gaping hole in midfield. The Gunners already tried to recruit top Championship prospect Emiliano Buendia but lost the transfer war to Aston Villa.
Houssem Aouar is another playmaker that the club have their eyes set on. Arsenal will have to pitch a better deal to Lyon to secure his services after being turned down last year.
Arsenal plan a huge bid for Maddison
Given their need for a player with the calibre of James Maddison, Arsenal are expected to go all-in. According to TheAFCBell, the Gunners are prepared to bid £60 million for the 24-year-old.
Moreover, the club are aiming to offer a tantalizing contract as well. Arsenal are reportedly ready to double his current £110k wage and even offer him the iconic No.10 shirt as well.
One of the major downsides for Maddison in this deal would be the fact that Arsenal won’t be competing in Europe this season. While at Leicester, he can compete for the UEFA Europa League.
“It’s not something I’m thinking about now. We’ll see what the summer brings,” is what Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers had said when asked about potential exits from the club.
