The Red Devils will look to improve their squad ahead of next season. They will likely finish second in the Premier League, behind city rivals Manchester City. They are also three wins away from winning the Europa League. If they manage to win the competition, it will be their first silverware since 2016.
But winning or at least challenging for the league title next season is the number one priority for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. They need to close the gap between them and City and that is only possible if they are active in the summer transfer window.
As reported, Solskjaer is expecting full backing from United’s hierarchy in the summer. It is going to be a make or break summer transfer window for Manchester United.
Norwegian remains number one target for Man United:
There is no denying the fact that United have a strong interest in Erling Haaland. The Norwegian was wanted by the Red Devils last January, but he decided to join Dortmund instead. And United have still not given up on him. Solskjaer sees his compatriot as the ideal signing for his team and has made him the number one target for the summer.
Haaland has enjoyed another scintillating season. He has scored the joint-second highest goals in the Bundesliga this season with 25 goals, only behind Robert Lewandowski. He has carried his impressive form in the Champions League as well and is the top scorer in the competition this season, with 10 goals to his name.
The 20-year-old forward has an impressive overall WhoScored rating of 7.62 this season, which is the best among his Dortmund teammates. But despite Haaland’s valiant efforts, Dortmund are having a very underwhelming season.
The Bundesliga outfit are currently fifth in the league table, a point behind fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt with three games remaining. They are in danger of not qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Will Haaland leave Dortmund?
If Dortmund fails to qualify for Champions League for next season, Haaland will likely leave the club. But they are planning to ban themselves from making any transfers this summer in a bid to keep hold of their talisman in Haaland.
Haaland has a release clause of £68 million, but that only comes into effect in the summer of 2022. Dortmund will ask for around £150 million for him this summer. And given the financial situation around the globe due to coronavirus pandemic, clubs won’t be able to match Dortmund’s asking price.
According to Bild, Haaland and his representatives are happy for him to stay at Dortmund next season. But that is only possible if they finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League. But it would be very tough for Dortmund to keep hold of their talisman with no Champions League football next season.
Manchester United will be keeping a very close eye on Haaland’s situation at Dortmund and will look to pounce on any opportunity to sign him this summer.
