Donny Van De Beek hasn’t had a great start to his life at Manchester United. Due to heavy competition in the midfield, Van De Beek has found it hard to break into the first XI. In fact, he had featured in only 13 Premier League games.
Out of these 13 appearances, he started just two games. Currently, Donny Van De Beek is with his national squad, the Netherlands. His team started the qualifying campaign poorly. They lost 4-2 to Turkey but now are turning the tables.
The Netherlands registered a 2-0 win against 2-0 Latvia four days backs. But yesterday, they recorded a thumping 7-0 triumph over Gibraltar. Holland saw six different goal scorers and one of them was Manchester United’s midfielder, Donny Van De Beek.
The 23-year old didn’t start the game but was introduced in the 77th minute of the game in place of Davy Klassen. It took him just eight minutes to add his name to the scoresheet as he bagged Netherland’s sixth goal of the night.
In the first half, Frank’s team failed to break the deadlock with ease. But once they found the back of the net for the first time in the 41st minute, the floodgates opened completely. From 61st to 64th minute, Netherlands score thrice to make sure that they don’t lose the game.
Donny Van De Beek also got an easy opportunity when he capitalized on the loose ball which came from Wijnaldum. Manchester United’s midfielder was unmarked in the box which helped him to fire the ball past the goalkeeper.
It is Holland’s third game in the last week but Van De Beek has not started any of these games. Hopefully, this goal will give him the much-needed confidence as players get ready to return to their respective clubs.
A positive sign for Donny Van De Beek?
It was an easy goal to score but nonetheless, a goal helps the player to boost his confidence. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will also hope the same. Solskjaer knows that the former Ajax player has not been given enough chances to show his talent but that is the nature of football.
One needs to prove his quality even in the limited number of games he plays. With Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in the squad, Van De Beek can’t just hope to get a start in every match. The manager needs to carve out results and for that, he needs his best player on the pitch.
This goal can probably ignite Van De Beek to get to his best. We have seen glimpses of him being a clever player but these glimpses have been very rare.
Manchester United are still competing for the Europa League and a strong finish in the Premier League. Van De Beek’s role is going to be very important in the coming three months.
The Manchester United manager will be hoping that the young lad can step up in this final phase of the season and show how important he is to the team. Even Daniel James scored a winner for Wales yesterday. Hopefully, both the players can up their game and prove to be a catalyst in this final push.
