The French manager clarifies that this Les Blues star will remain in Spain next season despite rumors of a move abroad
Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann is going nowhere, according to Didier Deschamps. Even while the French manager gets his squad ready for the upcoming World Cup, he was made to field questions on the future of two of his players, one of which was about that of the 27-year old, who was persistently linked with Barcelona.
Griezmann’s future was a subject of massive speculation towards the home stretch of last season as a move to Barcelona loomed large. The growing rumors and even some of Barcelona players’ welcoming statements about the transfer sparked tensions between the two camps, but the prattles have now died down. The former Real Sociedad appears to stay put in Atletico Madrid.
Manchester United too were in the fray, but Deschamps just cleared the air about his future. “There is talk about their [Griezmann and Nabil Fekir’s] futures,” the 49-year old told a news conference. “It’s not ideal but I won’t be able to have ideal conditions anyway. But Antoine will remain in Spain, that much is clear, so no worries.”
The French striker capped off another stellar campaign with the Rojiblancos, scoring 29 times in 49 appearances, including a brace in the Europa League final that cantered his side to a victory. That also led the Atletico chief Miguel Marin attempting to persuade him to stay with the entice of becoming a club legend one day.
But now that his focus is shifted to the World Cup, all the transfer storm has been weathered. Maybe only temporarily, but Griezmann recently hinted at staying put in the red half of Madrid.
Didier Deschamps is right – Antoine Griezmann is definitely staying in Spain. But we can do one better – he’s definitely staying at Atletico. The Frenchman has a great chance to follow into the footsteps of his teammate Fernando Torres and become a legend, someone like him may not pass up such an opportunity.
