The much anticipated maiden cricket tournament, World Test Championship final has not started in its full fledged form. The age old relationship between the rain gods and England continued to be evergreen. Rains have played a spoilsport to abandon the first day of play.

Ageas Bowl, Southampton has disappointed over a million fans owing to the impending dark and gloomy weather all throughout. With what started as a drizzle, took the form of heavy downpour to splash water on the hopes of a cracking test match final.

The persistence of drizzle even made it difficult for the super soppers to drain out necessary water off the field. Although, the intensity reduced at times, the coninuity of rains created confusion about the match’s fate.

To end speculations, BCCI tweeted Update: Unfortunately, there will be no play in the first session on Day 1 of the ICC World Test Championship final. This was the only update and also not a good one for the fans. Denmark Cricket Federation was quick to chip in and tweet that the conditions at their place are perfectly favourable.

Denmark Cricket Federation cheekily offers to host the WTC final after rains play spoilsport on day 1.

Here is what Denmark Cricket Federation tweeted

This brought in a volley of emotions amongst the social media users. Many interpreted this as a taunt to the choice of such a venue. On the other hand, some used this to slam the organisers of this mega event.

There were many hilarious memes generated out of this tweet as well. Some remarked that this event should be now conducted in Europe where it is sunny. Some also said that the next time it should be held in Mawsynram, the wettest place on earth. Fans came out in huge numbers to say that people learn from mistakes but ICC just loves committing it every next time.

Initially, the haven of cricket, Lords, would have hosted this iconic clash. However, with the situation posed by the pandemic and various bio-secure facilities easily available in Southampton, it received the honour at the end.

In addition, ICC oversaw the famous Hilton hotel as a perfect facility to house the players securely. Other stadiums in the country seemed to lack the advantages making them less favorable as hosts.

Fate of the contest in event of a washout

ICC has already announced 23rd of June to be a reserve day in the event of any obstacles happening during the 5 day match. However, the behaviour of the weather has not been too welcoming and this is very much evident from the first day itslef.

Cricketing fans have started speculating that this would lead to a no-result or a draw unless weather has other plans. The reserve day would be utilised to counter the loss of overs in the 5 days. Despite that, if the tournament ends in a tie, then both India and New Zealand would be declared joint winners and would divide the prize money back home.

We now finally know the playing eleven for the Indian team. The list is as follows : Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, skipper Virat Kohli, deputy Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant.

Since the rains prevented the toss, we are yet to know the playing eleven for the Kiwis. All the cricketing fans are hopeful of a bright sunny day in the upcoming 04 days. This would lead us to an ultimate result and sole winner of the prestigious combat.
