Deepak Hooda indeed brought the hearts of many to their mouths with a savage catch. He pulled off this astonishing act in the recent IPL encounter between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals. While this catch was not that difficult as it might have, however, Deepak Hooda did make it look one of its kind.
Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium saw another run feast in this IPL 2021. Both sides amassed almost 200 odd runs during their innings. The dew factor made chasing look way easier for the team batting second yet again.
Chasing a target of 199, Delhi Capitals made a commanding start. Shikhar Dhawan continued his fantastic rhythm in the IPL as he single-handedly enabled his side to cross the half-century mark in just 5 overs. The show was further extended to cross the 100 run mark in just 10 overs. While the match was going smoothly in the favor of the capitals, a dramatic incident happened in the 18th over.
KL Rahul appointed Jhye Richardson to bowl the 18th over to Rishabh Pant. Delhi capitals just needed 16 runs in the last 03 overs with 07 wickets in hand. The very first delivery was short and outside off. Rishabh Pant got tempted to pull it over Deepak Hooda at long-on. However, he miscued it as the ball hit the toe end of the bat and went straight into the fielder’s hands.
However, there was a surprising turn of events as Deepak Hooda almost missed the sitter. He juggles the ball a couple of times and finally makes it desperately.
Watch the video of the incident here:
The catch should have been an easy one at long-on as he was under it comfortably. However, the ball slipped out of Deepak Hooda’s fingers. He then seemed to be in an uncomfortable position as he was juggling with the ball. After several attempts, he made a plunging low dive to collect the ball before it hit the ground.
Deepak Hooda raised out his finger in happiness and confidence of succeeding in taking the catch. But the onfield umpires did not look convinced. They asked the third umpire to give their final verdict who adjudged Rishabh Pant as out.
This wicket did not however help the Punjab Kings as it was too late till then. Lalit Yadav and Marcus Stoinis did the remainder of formalities in a not so hospitable way. As a result, Delhi Capitals won the match by 8 wickets with 10 deliveries to spare.
This win has taken them to the second spot in the points table behind the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Delhi capitals registered their second win out of 03 matches while Punjab Kings have faced their second consecutive defeat to stay in the penultimate position.
Delhi Capitals thrash the Punjab Kings
Considering the dew factor, Delhi Capitals skipper, Risabh Pant elected to bowl first after winning the toss. This decision however was converted into a boomerang by the openers of Punjab Kings. Both KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal smashed individual half-centuries to set up a 122 run stand.
Mayank was dismissed by Meriwala when he was at 69 off 36 deliveries. Soon after KL Rahul was also sent to the pavilion at 61 runs. The run rate saw a steady decrease since then. However, Deepak Hooda and Shahrukh Khan’s valiant surge towards the end enabled the Kings to post 195 runs at the end of 20 overs.
The pitch saw a dearth of wickets as bowlers struggled. This was further facilitated by Shikhar Dhawan’s majestic innings for Delhi capitals during the chase. He single-handedly took the Capitals across the line by scoring 92 runs off just 49 deliveries. His innings comprised 13 boundaries and 02 huge sixes. He was hence rightfully adjudged as the player of the match.
