Dean Henderson has 6 games to claim No.1 spot amid De Gea absence

The 23-year-old English goalkeeper, Dean Henderson, looks to have finally got the chance he has been waiting for. According to reports, he is set to represent Manchester United for the next 6 fixtures. David De Gea’s absence for one month has given the youngster a chance to stretch out for the number 1 spot.

Dean Henderson joined the Red Devil’s academy at the age of 14 in 2011. His impressive display for the U-18 side earned him a deserving contract with the club. He signed his first professional contract of 5 years in 2015. He extended that by 2 more years in 2018, making him a Red Devil until 2022.

After signing his contract, he was sent out on various loan spells to gain some match time. He spent time at Stockport County, Grimsby Town, Shrewsbury Town, and Sheffield United. His best performances came with the last 2 clubs.

He established himself as the number 1 choice at Sheffield United. He played a crucial role in helping the team get promoted to the Premier League since 2007. Dean kept an impressive 13 clean sheets that season, before returning back to his parent club.

David De Gea joined Manchester United in 2011 and is set to complete 10 years at the club. He had a troublesome start to his career at Old Trafford. In 2015, he was almost on the verge of joining Real Madrid but a failed fax prevented the deal from completion.

He didn’t waste any time in asserting dominance as he became the first United player to win the Manchester United’s Player of the year award 3 years in a row. In fact, it was because of him that United didn’t get further humiliated in the post-Ferguson era.

David crossed a huge milestone last season when he became the goalkeeper with the 2nd highest appearance for the club. He has 434 appearances to his name only behind Alex Stepney who has a mammoth 539 appearances. He also overtook Edwin Van der Sar in the clean sheets tally.

Can Dean Henderson make a statement?

Unfortunately, the Great Dane is having a decline and has been subject to criticism. And Dean Henderson who is the second choice at the moment was tipped to steal the spot. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer kept his trust in David and let him retain the spot.

Dean was reportedly unsettled with his playtime and was rumored to leave the club. Likes of Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur were even ready to sign him in case he left. But it looks like he might finally stay.

De Gea is said to miss the remainder of the season due to personal reasons. According to certain reports, he has taken a paternal leave to be with his wife who is expecting her first child. “I can’t really say about David, it’s a private matter,” Solskjaer said after the draw against Crystal Palace.

Dean was in goal for United in the match against Crystal Palace. He made a crucial save late in the game to hand his team a point. Although he features in cup matches, he has made only 4 appearances in the Premier League. 

“Dean is ready if he’s called upon, you saw that. He kept his concentration.” It is going to be a big task for him as he will be facing Manchester City, AC Milan(twice), West Ham, and Leicester City in quick successions. But if he delivers, he deserves to get the number 1 spot.
