Liverpool continued their disappointing home form this season, as they drew 1-1 with Newcastle United in the Premier League. The Reds have only won one home game this year, losing to the likes of Burnley, Brighton, Everton, and Fulham.
The game started very well for Liverpool as Mo Salah scored in the third minute. But Jurgen Klopp’s men were guilty of missing some big chances later in the game. And it looked like they were made to pay for their missed chances, as substitute Callum Wilson scored in injury time. But the goal was controversially ruled out by VAR after Wilson looked to have handled the ball before scoring.
But Klopp’s men failed to heed that warning and surrendered two points. Another Newcastle substitute Joe Willock powered the ball home with almost the last kick of the game.
The result is a massive blow to Liverpool’s Champions League ambition for next season. Later yesterday, Chelsea beat West Ham United to go four points ahead of the Reds in fourth-placed, with five games to go. Liverpool faces a sterner test next week as they travel to Old Trafford to play second-placed Manchester United.
Saint-Maximin ran the show against Liverpool
Newcastle’s winger Allan Saint-Maximin was a menace for Liverpool’s defence. He was at the centre of every Magpies attack and was integral to their hard-fought draw.
The 24-year had a WhoScored rating of 7.44 at Anfield, only three players had better ratings than him. He also completed the most dribbles on the pitch with eight. His pace and trickery were too much for Liverpool’s defence. Both of Liverpool’s centre-back in Ozan Kabak and Fabinho were booked for fouls on Saint-Maximin.
His performance was so impressive that some Liverpool fans want the club to sign him in the summer transfer window.
He has been Newcastle’s standout player this season, scoring three goals and providing four assists in just 14 starts. A move to a bigger club is imminent for Saint-Maximin. Some Liverpool fans might hope the move is to Anfield.
Saint-Maximin defends Mane
One Liverpool fan was so impressed by Saint-Maximin’s performance that he tweeted saying if he could join them in a potential swap deal with Sadio Mane. Saint-Maximin responded by saying he does not appreciate the message because he felt it was disrespectful towards Mane.
He also admitted that he is not on Mane’s level yet. This is a class act from the Newcastle attacker.
There is no denying the fact that Mane has struggled this season. The Senegal international has just one goal in his last 13 league appearances. The 29-year old was key to Liverpool’s Premier League triumph last season, scoring 18 goals and providing 10 assists in the process. He also won the Premier League golden boot the season before that by scoring 22 goals.
And despite his dip in form this campaign, he is still an important part of this Liverpool team. It is only a matter of time before he starts replicating the form he has shown in previous seasons.
