The Blues have reportedly identified three possible replacements for Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois if he plans on leaving the club.
After failing to qualify for the Champions League, Chelsea is set to endure a rather difficult summer in trying to keep hold of their star players. One superstar who is quite eager to leave Stamford Bridge is Thibaut Courtois as the 26-year-old wants to reunite with his family at the Spanish capital. With Courtois’ Chelsea contract expiring next summer, the shot-stopper is now willing to sign an extension at the West London club with Real Madrid lurking for his services.
Even though Chelsea are adamant against selling their prized asset, there is a sense of inevitability that Courtois will join European champions Real Madrid sooner or later. And Chelsea is now planning to replace their highly rated keeper and have shortlisted three goalkeeping options if Courtois does decide to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
Three Players Who Could Replace Courtois-
According to OK Diario, Chelsea is eyeing moves for either Napoli’s Pepe Reina, Stoke City’s Jack Butland, and Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel. The three have been projected to replace Chelsea’s current number one Courtois if he leaves the club. Reina spent eight seasons with Liverpool and the 35-year-old Spaniard has the experience of playing in the Premier League.
Jack Butland was hugely impressive for Stoke City last term but could not stop the Potters from suffering relegation. Kasper Schmeichel was one of the hero’s for Leicester City between the sticks as the Foxes claimed the Premier League trophy a couple of seasons ago. With Danny Ward joining the King Power Stadium, it has given Chelsea an option to make a bid for the Danish international.
Chelsea is going to suffer a major blow with Courtois leaving the club and I doubt that any of the above-mentioned players could replace him. However I feel, the best option to fill in Courtois’ boots would be Jack Butland.
