This summer Chelsea have been trying very hard to sign a striker. Fabrizio Romano had already confirmed that the Blues will look to sign a striker this season. They did try their luck with Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane early in the transfer window.
However, Lukaku confirmed that he will stay at Inter Milan. While Tottenham don’t want to sell Kane to Chelsea. Thus, they turned their attention to Erling Haaland. However, it now looks like they will abandon the pursuit of the Dortmund striker. The BVB have slammed a huge price tag on him and the Blues are not keen on him as his $75 million clause triggers next season.
Chelsea offer $50 million for Robert Lewandowski
According to The Sun, Chelsea are willing to make a bid of $50 million to sign Robert Lewandowski. The Blues are keen to provide Thomas Tuchel with a prolific striker before the start of the new season. Bayern Munich are not very keen on letting him go as his contract expires in 2023.
However, Chelsea have the financial muscle to test the Bavarian resolve of keeping the Pole in Bundesliga. The report has also stated that Lewandowski himself wants to play in the Premier League before during his peak. He is 32 years old right now, and he is currently in the best form of his career.
Why does Chelsea want to sign Robert Lewandowski?
The Blues have won the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel, and they are looking to build upon it. Last season, there were many times when it could be seen that the Blues could have done better if they had a prolific striker.
Timo Werner was signed last season to get some goals for Chelsea. However, he has miserably failed to score goals in the Premier League. While Tuchel does not seem to fancy Tammy Abraham, who was the top scorer in his first season at the club.
Last season, the former Dortmund striker scored 48 goals and further provided 9 assists in all competitions for Bayern Munich. To put in context all the Blues strikers, Werner, Abraham and Giroud could only manage 35 goals in all competitions. This indicates how badly Chelsea need a new striker to compete for trophies.
Will Chelsea be able to sign Lewandoski?
From a financial position, $50 million is more than good enough for the Polish international. If he was any other player, the Bavarians would have been happy to sell him for such a price, but that is not the case. This season in the Champions League quarter-finals against PSG, Lewandoski missed both the games. It should not come as a surprise that the Bundesliga champions were out by the Parisians.
It looks like Bayern Munich were not prepared for this situation. They seem to have been caught off guard. They don’t have a replacement for the Pole, and they are aware that they will struggle without him. On the other hand, Chelsea have made a $50 million offer for him and they know they won’t get the same price for him next season.
However, keeping Lewandoski at Allianz Arena is likely to be the decision of Bayern Munich. He will only be sold if he himself insists he wants the Bavarians to accept the offer from the Champions League winner.
12th Man Opinion
Chelsea would love to see the Polish international dawn that Blue jersey. However, they are aware that next summer Erling Haaland would be available for $75 million as well. If their club signs the Bavarian striker this summer, they won’t be able to sign the Norwegian prodigy next season.
