Chelsea will be hosting Real Madrid for the fixture that would decide the fate of one of the Champions League finalists. However, Chelsea might be without their star midfielder, Mason Mount, who was substituted following an injury scare in the 2-0 win against Fulham.
Mason Mount is tipped to be the next best English midfielder. And he has been living up to that expectations. Mount is a complete product of the Chelsea Academy. He joined The Blues at a young age in 2005. He has been there for 12 years and has featured in the U-18 as well as the U-21 Chelsea side.
The midfielder had made a good impression for which he was equally awarded. Mason signed a 4-year contract with the club that tied him till 2021. In 2017, he was sent on his first loan stint to a Dutch club called Vitesse.
In the year he spent there, Mason made 39 appearances and scored an incredible 14 goals. Although he was named in the Eredivisie Team of the Week multiple times, his biggest achievement was winning the club’s Player of the Year Award.
After returning to his parent club, he was sent on his next spell to the Championship side Derby County where he played for the future Chelsea coach. Despite being sidelined for 2 months with an injury, he featured regularly for Frank Lampard’s side. By the end of his spell, he made 44 appearances and scored 11 goals in the process.
Mason Mount signed a new 5-year contract with the club in 2019, which was also his breakthrough year at Chelsea. After Frank Lampard was appointed as the new manager he made the youngster his most trusted midfielder. Since his Chelsea debut, he has hardly missed any fixture.
Mason Mount doubtful to feature for the Chelsea side against Real Madrid
The 22-year-old has got the chance to feature in the Champions League both the season. In his first year, Chelsea narrowly booked the Champions League berth as they finished 4th. This year also was a bright start to the season. Chelsea were the Premier League table-toppers for a while and they were also enjoying a dominant European campaign.
However, things completely turned from the start of 2021. Actually, the form started deteriorating from December, but it became worse a month later. A series of winless run saw them drop to the mid-table and Frank Lampard was sacked.
Thomas Tuchel succeeded him and it has been an incredible transition in results. Thanks to him, Chelsea now have a great chance to secure a top-4 spot. On top of that, they have lost only a single match after his appointment. Overall, Chelsea are enjoying a brilliant run and are superior when compared to the rivals.
Chelsea defeated a strong Atletico Madrid and even defeated the underdogs FC Porto to reach their first Champions League semi-final since 2012. Their trip to Istanbul is only halted by Real Madrid. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw, but Chelsea have the upper hand as they an away goal advantage.
However, Chelsea might have been dealt with a huge blow. In their match against Fulham, Mason Mount was substituted in the 72nd minute after he suffered a suspected back injury. The gravity of the injury is unknown and everyone is hoping that he will be fit for the Madrid clash.
“I hope Mason will be okay. I don’t think it was a big thing but we took him off so he can recover ahead of Real Madrid.” – Thomas Tuchel said in the post-match interview.
